Therapy is about building a meaningful, caring relationship between the client and therapist. These bonds develop when both are fully present, engaged, and invested in the clinical work. It's most beneficial when clients and therapists work collaboratively to evaluate, challenge, and reconstruct systems-- all of which lead to a healthier and more meaningful life. My success in providing treatment comes from my honesty and genuine interest in who my clients are and what motivates them. Clients respond well to my sense of humor and the secure space I create to feel comfortable in disclosing personal issues of concern.

“Greetings, weary traveler.” My name is Catherine and I’m a licensed clinical professional counselor. Though I specialize in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), I live and counsel according to my value of adaptability as I follow Malcolm X’s philosophy of “by any means necessary” when it comes to modifying my approach to help those I’m privileged to work with.
Biofeedback training is an evidence-based, short-term, mind-body therapy in which clients learn to control physical responses to stress that are often involuntary and can feel uncontrollable. During a session with Dr. Pabst, she will utilize biofeedback sensors to scientifically track in-session breath patterns, muscle tension, perspiration, and heart-rate so you can receive visual and/or auditory feedback on your physical responses. As a result, you can see your innate stress responses in real-time, learn what triggers them and ultimately have the ability to self-regulate.
Everyone can use a little help when things get complicated; conflict is a part of everyday life. Therapy is a space to genuinely connect and develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your emotions, your experiences, and your thoughts. Making the decision to start therapy can be a hard one. Whether you’re looking to work through trauma, relationship concerns, anxiety, stress, or difficult emotions; my goal is to help you reach your highest potential, while helping you work through any barriers or obstacles along the way.
There are many factors in life that can affect our emotional well-being and functioning. This can leave us feeling overwhelmed, powerless, or just not our best self. Through a collaborative approach, I aim to help you manage whatever unwanted feelings and symptoms you may be experiencing. No matter how big or small you feel your challenges may be, I believe we can all benefit from taking time out of the busyness of life to focus on ourselves. I am here to support you and empower you during this process.
If you find that thoughts, feelings, and urges are getting in the way of living your best life, I will help you develop new skills to address these difficulties. Whether you are struggling with intrusive thoughts, motivation difficulties, anxiety or fears about the world or the future, I will create an individualized treatment plan that helps you move forward in life. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), our sessions will examine the factors that are getting in the way before working on concrete steps to overcome these difficulties.
On the outside things are fine, but on the inside you feel overwhelmed and disconnected. Being a perfectionist has helped you in a lot of areas...you've experienced successes, but you desire more meaning and peace in your life. I will serve as a compassionate guide, helping you feel understood and guided in this process. I will help you discover practical strategies as well as the deeper "whys" to your feelings and thoughts, including the self-criticism. While not all clients choose to incorporate spirituality, for those who do, I can also incorporate faith-based perspectives in alignment with clients' values, stage and needs.
Maybe you've asked yourself, why can't I shake these feelings? The difficulty concentrating, worrying, sadness, crying spells, feeling empty or just stuck. Or have you thought, when will I get over this? I'm tired of having flashbacks, feeling "on edge" and restless nights. Perhaps you've considered "OK, now what?" after the divorce, unexpected loss, new job, a recent diagnosis, infidelity, or navigating this space of uncertainty and pandemic related changes. Whether it's a relational struggle, figuring out your happiness, exploring your faith and everything else in between, you do have a choice in creating the life you desire!

My core belief that people are resilient and are capable of growth. The first step to making change in your life or to get “unstuck” can be difficult. With warmth, encouragement, acceptance and a little laughter, we will work together to find new ways of coping, identify patterns that no longer suit your needs, build and repair relationships, and create a positive therapeutic relationship while you explore your desires, goals, and motivations. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, affirming, and client-centered. Through a social justice lens, I recognize the multiple systems that affect your experiences and relationships.
I offer individual and sex therapy via telehealth for adults all over Illinois. Life is a work in progress, and progress isn't always a linear path. It's inevitable to have hurdles along the way, and we sometimes need support to better cope with these hurdles. I'm a firm believer in You being the most important person in Your life. You matter most, you know yourself best, and are the star of your life story. I want to be able to offer an empathetic, nonjudgmental, and safe space for you to process your thoughts and feelings, adding a bit of humor along the way. I want to be along side with you, to help you see your own strength, and work collaboratively with you to help cope with the daily hurdles of life.
I strongly believe that every human being has innate inner strength and I want to help you fully realize your own. I have the most experience treating anxiety, depression, self-esteem concerns, disordered eating, addictions and trauma. My approach is non-pathologizing and largely influenced by the Internal Family Systems model and values exploration. This healing framework is particularly useful for those who are interested in identifying harmful patterns of self-protection, reestablishing a sense of internal harmony and aligning their behavior with their values.
Do you refer to yourself as a “people pleaser?” Ever find yourself doing something out of obligation because you have trouble saying “no?” Situations like this can feel very confusing and upsetting. Many people struggle with identifying and expressing their needs and wants. Oftentimes this leads to difficulty setting boundaries, balancing work/life, and experiencing feelings of resentment. Creating your own story is one of the most empowering things you can do. Therapy helps you explore your own values and beliefs so you can learn what feels meaningful to you.
I enjoy working with diverse individuals and have clinical experience from a variety of settings, like community partners, residential substance use treatment facilities, department of corrections, college counseling centers, and schools. Largely, my work has been with marginalized groups, complex trauma, and severe mental illness.

Therapy is a pathway to peace of mind and personal growth. I foster a supportive, nonjudgmental, warm, and empathic therapeutic environment conducive to openly discussing and navigating issues standing in the way of desired change. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I specialize in the treatment of mood-related struggles, anxiety, relationship concerns, grief and loss, self-esteem issues, and difficulty adjusting to life transitions. My approach is grounded in evidence-based practices that develop existing strengths and coping skills, promote healthier relationships, and empower people to achieve meaningful growth in their lives.
I strongly value relationships and utilize a client centered approach with everyone who walks through my door. I am open and honored to hear feedback from clients so I can best meet their needs. I am cognizant that systems of oppression are present everywhere, even in the therapy room. As a white therapist, I am committed to the ongoing antiracism work needed to address how these systems impact my own work on an individual level and systemically. I view therapy as a partnership and want my clients to feel safe and open when in my presence. The client is the expert in the room.
