Making the decision to begin therapy can be difficult and may weigh heavily on us yet it can make all the difference when we feel overwhelmed, helpless, or alone. If you have something in mind that you would like to see change, we can work collaboratively to address emotional barriers, past experiences, stressors, or patterns of behavior which may be negatively impacting your symptoms. I believe that a non-judgmental, safe, validating, culturally competent, and empathic therapeutic relationship is the foundation for change. I specialize in treating depression,
anxiety
, life transitions, trauma, and relational conflicts.

I see people dealing with a variety of issues including, but not limited to, relationship and communication concerns, divorce,
anxiety
, depression, adoption issues, and trauma.
Therapy is an opportunity for personal development in a safe, supportive, and sometimes challenging environment. My primary method of treatment is in-depth exploration aimed at getting to know yourself and the ways you operate to give you greater choice in life . The relationship between therapist and patient is central to this approach.

In addition, I also have a wealth of experience and enjoy working with adolescents and young adults dealing with depression,
anxiety
, separation and transitional life issues.
In my practice I see adolescents and adults. I view therapy as a place where you can more fully understand yourself and your relationships and therefore be empowered to make better choices in your life. My style is informed by dynamically oriented and relational therapy. Regardless of theory, the most important part of the process is building a relationship built on trust and safety. Through this safe and supportive environment we will help you build on your strengths and problem solving skills as well as deepen your self awareness and self understanding.

Whether you're dealing with racial and cultural oppression,
anxiety
, trauma or depression.
In a fast, busy, and ever-isolating world, it can feel challenging to stay in-tune with yourself and connected to what’s most important to you. Sometimes all we need is a listening ear, a space to process what life throws at us, and to remember that we’re not alone. As a therapist, I offer a non-judgemental space for expression, reflection, and reconnection. When you’re ready, we’ll work together to support your goals, identify and build on your strengths, and challenge you to live as your best self. I am an artist and an art therapist, so if you're game I'd love to incorporate creative elements into our work.

Are you struggling with unwanted or distressing thoughts, feelings, or urges? This might present as
anxiety
, be the result of past trauma, or it might be something else. Either way, it's likely that therapy can help. Instead of attempting to avoid painful content, we use awareness-raising, mindfulness, and other strategies to change how we interact with our thoughts and feelings, which ultimately increases our ability to tolerate emotional pain and focus on living a meaningful life.

Hello, I'm Dr. Chris Chroniak. For 36 years I have assisted individuals struggling with depression, stress and
anxiety
, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, OCD, a relationship or lack of one, as well as numerous other psychological and emotional issues. I begin therapy by developing a warm and genuine relationship with my client. We then work together to explore and work through the underlying issues that block growth and cause pain or discomfort. I also teach my clients practical and effective tools that help them deal with painful and troubling thoughts and feelings, as they occur, moment by moment.

In the 20+ years I have worked in private practice I have treated individuals and families with a variety of presenting problems including
anxiety
, depression, unfulfilling relationships, parenting concerns, identity formation, history of trauma and abuse, autism spectrum concerns, infidelity, and many others.
When a client comes to me for psychotherapy the first goal is to fully understand the nature of their discontent in the context of a warm, open, nonjudgmental space. We work together to create a vision of what it will look like when the client is feeling more content, and then within the therapeutic relationship move toward change that will realize the client's vision. I am a combination of warm, supportive, directive, interpretive, and reflective. The therapy may be short term or long term, and may be individual or with significant others (family or partner).

anxiety
, pressure, or shame are getting in the way. There is a reason you’re struggling now, and together we will explore and give voice to your whole self as a way for you to recognize your inherent worth.

In searching for a psychotherapist, it is likely that you have a specific problem in mind. When these problems intensify or linger for long periods of time, they can lead to symptoms of
anxiety
and/or depression which interfere with your quality of life and sense of well-being. If you are seeking help in overcoming these difficulties, there are two important factors to consider when choosing a therapist. First, it is important that, after a few visits with the therapist, you feel that there is potential to form a strong working alliance.

My areas of expertise pertain to Couples,
Anxiety
, Depression, Bipolar, Trauma/ PTSD, Complex PTSD, Eating Disorders, ADHD, Stress-Management, Work/Life balance, and Life Transitions.
Often when people start working with me they tell me intellectually they know how to handle something but emotionally they are stuck and keep doing the same unhelpful things over and again. Other times, people come in not knowing why they feel as they do, but they just want to feel better. Initially, couples frequently report having the same problem or argument. By collaborating with my clients, I help them work through what is getting in the way of healthier functioning and relationships. I take a systemic, integrative perspective, informed by research, utilizing a variety of approaches so that I can best meet your needs.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
