My work with individuals has focused on improving relationships, family of origin exploration, and managing stress and anxiety.
The therapy process is both challenging and transformative. I have worked with clients who seek to improve their relationship with themselves and others, navigate life transitions, and learn new ways of coping with the inevitable ups and downs of life. I have deep respect for my clients' courage and vulnerability, and it's a privilege to be a trusted part of the therapy process.

I am a trauma-informed, social justice-based Relationship and Family Therapist specializing in sex therapy. I have contributed to the sexual health field for a decade through research, advocacy, and education. This culminated in a sex therapy certificate at Adler University which allows me to systemically work with a variety of sexual identities. I have experience working with BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and TGNC individuals and partnerships, including kink, polyamory, or CNM. Rekindling sexual intimacy, pre-orgasmic individuals, those healing through trauma, and those redefining their relationship outlook are also passions.

You may come to see me for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's the way you are feeling and other times it's an event or situation you find yourself in life. We will work together in a trusting and respectful therapeutic relationship to better understand and work-through unresolved issues that are getting in the way for you. You deserve to feel better and have a fuller life experience.

My practice as an art therapist and counselor is founded on an eclectic theoretical foundation. I believe the most successful way to achieve personal goals in therapy is by developing a trusting relationship. Taking the time to learn a client’s strengths and aspirations, as well as their personal and family history with curiosity and compassion is imperative. The foundation of my practice is strengths-based - I approach our work together with the understanding that everyone experiences challenges and has many abilities that may be utilized to reduce symptoms, navigate challenges, and improve relationships.

Are you on a path to parenthood or adjusting to life while pregnant or post-partum? Maybe you've had a pregnancy loss or things haven't gone the way you expected along the way. Are IVF, ART, or TFMR part of your story? Perhaps you have experienced grief connected to being a parent or with your own parents. You may be navigating your journey alone or with a chosen family . Pregnant people and their non-birthing partners need support during these important life changes. If any of this resonates with you, time and space to talk about it can be helpful. From there, changes and next steps on your path may seem more attainable.

I often draw on psychodynamic tools, like CBT, internal family parts, and EMDR to help clients stabilize their anxiety and self-regulate.
You are overwhelmed with work and your personal life and feel like you haven't tapped into your true potential. My name is Kirk Johnson and I'm a Licensed Counselor/Therapist. My clients typically start therapy to improve their stress/anxiety management, interpersonal relationships, ADHD management/identity exploration, self-confidence, and relationship with trauma. Often times, we need to go deeper to find meaning in their past and present experiences. These conversations work to create pathways to understand the narratives you tell yourself, can help stabilize big feelings, and build inner strength.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
