While I'm a generalist and experienced in working with depression, anxiety, and trauma, I specialize in working with people who are misunderstood: the LGBTQ communities, people impacted by HIV, and people in Recovery.
Sometimes life goes awry: dreams don't work out, relationships change, tragedy strikes. Other times, things are going well and we want to continue the progress. Regardless of what's brought you here, therapy can be a great way to help. The foundation of my work is trust; I want to ensure you feel safe and comfortable in therapy. Since 2007, I've practiced in many different environments and helped thousands of patients work toward their goals. I'm cross-trained in several fields and have worked in outpatient, inpatient, and emergent settings with a variety of populations including pediatric, adolescent, and adult.

Feeling stuck, frustrated, stressed, or in search of meaning? These emotions are universal, but they can hinder us from reaching our goals and living authentically. If you identify with the LGBTQ community, as a gay identifying therapist, I understand you might experience an added layer of stress. I understand the impact of these feelings and believe in hope for a better tomorrow. I specialize in helping clients with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, relational issues, and men's mental health issues.

I have been honored to work with clients who experience many issues such as anxiety, depression, poor familial relationships, loss, death, grief, divorce, commitment difficulties, loneliness, PTSD, difficulty sleeping, concentrating, focusing, ADD, eating disorders, codependency, isolation. And more.

Whatever challenges are impacting your life, you don't have to face them alone. That's where I come in – to help you heal, gain new insights and perspectives, and develop the tools you need to best care for yourself. At the heart of my approach is building an authentic, egalitarian therapeutic relationship where you feel safe, heard, and best able to work towards your goals in a supportive environment. My primary population focus is LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse clients, and as a queer person myself, I believe creating a safe, affirming space is key to successful counseling.

I have clinical experience working with people presenting with anxiety and depression as well as low self-esteem, phase-of-life and transition problems, racial issues, relational issues (whether marital or peer), and familial distress. I believe that with genuine care, support, and accountability, clients can tackle their goals with more understanding and willingness. Though change can be difficult, I believe it is more attainable through the building of a genuine therapeutic relationship. As human beings, connection and support are necessities- especially when we are working on feeling better.

My experience has primarily been working with adults and older adults who are coping with anxiety, depression, complex grief, loss (of any kind), end-of-life planning, major life transitions, caregiving stress, and chronic or terminal illness. I am passionate about facilitating empathic conversations which address the social stigma and fear around death and dying, and helping clients identify what it means to have “a good death.” I am also interested in working with young adult (18+) and adult clients, particularly those facing “quarter-life crises,” relationship issues, and difficulty with substance use.

My practice focuses on reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, adjusting to a changing world and improving communication skills in order to enjoy more healthy and fulfilling relationships.
I use a strengths focused approach to therapy. Moving forward requires a look at what a person is already doing well in addition to the challenges in their lives. My approach includes insight oriented and cognitive techniques which I utilize in my practice. It takes a very strong person to admit they need help and to take the steps necessary to find a therapist who will be the best fit possible. In my view, therapy is teamwork and the therapist and client must work collaboratively for the best possible outcome of their therapy experience.

It's anxiety-provoking to invite someone into the nuance of your life and potentially feel judged.
As an AASECT-certified sex therapist, I work with individuals and couples facing challenges regarding differences in sex drive, sexual pain & dysfunctions such as ED and vaginismus, issues with orgasm, and other issues related to intimacy and performance. While anxiety is not always the cause of these challenges, anxiety is certainly part and parcel of how they manifest. Therapy is geared towards optimizing mental and physical health, managing anxiety through lifestyle changes, improving communication with loved ones, and reaching for better quality of life, which frequently includes: better sex!

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
