Psychodynamic Therapists in Chicago Heights, IL
I am a master-level therapist who has over 20 years of experience working with individuals who struggle with maintaining optimal and balanced mental health. Mental well- being is at the heart of the work that I do. I believe that at some point in time we experience trauma or severe life stressors which can seriously impair our daily functionality. These experiences, although emotional in nature, have the propensity to negatively impact both emotional health and physical health. My passion is bringing understanding as well as healing to counteract the harmful effects of traumatic/stressful encounters which impact us.

If an acorn contains within it an oak, so also you began your life with the prospect of becoming a certain person, your natural self. Like that young oak, which managed to grow somehow despite poor soil or too much shade or scarce water, you also have survived. But your growth has been affected by some toxic experiences, some injuries. Despite those woundings to your natural self, you can still imagine who you are meant to be. In fact you have already begun to realize who you really are, despite the distorting influences that you have been through.

You may be moving through a transition, burnout, anxiety, relationship struggles, or the long echoes of childhood trauma. I work with adults who are ready to stop pushing through and make space to realign. Together we move at a rhythm that's sustainable, not performative — paying attention to more than what you're saying: how you're holding it, what your body knows, and the stories you've been telling yourself about your life.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic styles in my treatment approach including humanistic, relational and psychodynamic based approaches.
Across all therapeutic modalities I aim to maintain a safe space, which allows both therapist and client to collaborate and engage in natural conversation. I believe it is through these interactions where a relationship can be developed and certain insights come to light. In our work together, clients are able to learn more about their relational patterns, both through the experience of retelling their stories as well as firsthand within therapeutic interactions. As these insights provide opportunity for better understanding of current difficulties, ultimately, meaningful and empowered change can be pursued.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy allows us to understand how our past and present interact.
From a young age, we are deeply influenced by our experiences in the world and our relationships with others. These experiences, and the meanings we make from them, are often internalized – becoming part of us on both a conscious and unconscious level. We make sense of this the best we can. This sometimes results in us developing ways of thinking, behaving, and relating to others that can be self-defeating and cause pain in our lives. Yet often we are unaware that these patterns are the source of our distress. Other times we recognize this but remain baffled by our seeming inability to change what we so desperately wish to.

As you scroll through all these listings you know you’re looking for something—and it's probably more than just a certain specialty or set of credentials. More likely it's a sense that this is someone who might get it, whatever your particular "it" is. Someone with whom you might enjoy a particularly solid fit, or what the academics call "rapport." Which interestingly is by all accounts, the single best predictor for success in therapy: how well people connect with their therapists.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
