It takes courage to seek support, and the rewards of doing so can lead to a lifetime of fulfillment. I understand, have experienced, and can empathize with the emotional challenges life has to offer. Working together, we can cultivate growth by understanding the obstacles that you face and develop solutions that can help you gain control of your life. Ultimately, therapy can guide you to greater self-awareness, self-esteem, and most importantly, a more fulfilling life.

As a 3rd generation social services worker, I often joke that I was born into this field. I cannot imagine myself in any other profession. This is all I have ever wanted to do. With that being said, I was also born into a society that often refuses to accept the necessity for therapy. Especially for men and people of color. Part of my aim as a clinician is to dispel some of the bias towards seeking help for mental health issues. If you had an injured limb, you would seek out help. If you had contracted a virus, you would seek out help. Why should seeking out help for emotional and mental illness be any different? It should not!

Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or any other concern, there are therapists who are ready to listen. Together, we will work at a pace that is appropriate and manageable to achieve your goals.

Cory Grad is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Illinois with five years of experience. He has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Loyola University and a Master of Social Work from Aurora University. Cory believes the mind can be a paradise or a prison, depending on the direction we steer it. He feels the meeting between client and therapist is a sacred time in which both parties work collaboratively to help the client heal, learn, and grow. By the time treatment concludes, the client is not “fixed” but rather, returning to the flow of life.

Although there are times when we feel broken, hopeless, and unsure of the future, there is hope. As a therapist, I provide a safe environment for you to process your vulnerabilities, expand your coping skills and begin to heal. As a psychodynamic therapist, my approach emphasizes the unconscious mind, therapeutic interpretation and early childhood experiences. I help you better understand the unconscious forces which impact your current thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I'm an Internal Family Systems informed clinician and can help you identify your protective inner parts. I practice from an anti-racist & anti-oppressive lens.

Sometimes we struggle with unhealthy patterns and feel lost or less able to cope. Our sessions are a safe place to process relationship issues, work on making changes, & acquire tools to deal with life's stressors. We store much of our emotional past within our physical bodies; together, we'll learn to release that energy using all 5 senses to become more present. My therapy style is warm, collaborative, sexuality and gender-affirming. Since 2009, I have worked with a diversity of people in both inpatient and outpatient settings and helped many of them take the steps to turn pain into growth and regain control of their lives.

I work with clients confronting issues surrounding sex addiction and other compulsive behaviors and/or substance abuse. The partners and family members of those confronting addiction often have a unique trauma experience and I am passionate about helping all those impacted. My work with this population has taught me that many flawed solutions present as a result of trauma. I work diligently to assist clients in discovering and understanding their historical experiences and how those experiences contribute to the unmanageability or pain in their current lives.

My goal as a therapist is to help you prioritize yourself in a way that leads to growth and a life worth celebrating. Growth can be as straightforward as learning to cope with a difficult situation, or as complex as charting a brand new life for yourself. Together, we will work to uncover your unfulfilled needs, the related obstacles, and any thoughts and perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling life. Ultimately, my hope and the focus of our work together is to help you make meaningful changes that are good for you, and those around you.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
