Like many of the families we work with, you may be feeling stuck. Perhaps you've read books, skimmed websites, and talked to friends and family in an effort to address your child's emotional or behavioral issues...yet he/she still seems to be struggling. Turning to someone else for help can feel like a big step. After all, as your child's parent , who knows him/her better than you? We agree. Thrive Child Psychology works in partnership with youth and families to get to the root of challenges, establish goals, and use research-based tools to achieve them.

[I am currently not taking new clients, wishing you the best in your healing journeys] Often, we mistakenly ask the question, "what's wrong with me?" when the question to ask is, "what happened to me?" I work with children, adolescents, and adults - individually and in parent -child dynamics.

Public speaker and counselor in private practice at Elliott Counseling Services focused on life transitions including divorce, parenting , disabling diagnoses, grief and self-esteem.
Before I was a therapist, I was an educator. For one course, my job was to teach first responders how to get important information from potentially traumatized witnesses/victims. I often wondered what I would do if I were permitted to see the crisis through. I believe it's my combination of a solid background in communication-which includes relationships, gender-speak, assertiveness and self-talk-and my education in Clinical Psychology and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor certification that provide for a well-balanced approach to individual counseling.

To best serve my clients, I limit my practice to only 15 couples a week-all of whom are serious about working on their relationship. Has your life taken an unexpected detour? Maybe it's a chaotic relationship, unrelating anxiety or navigating difficult family dynamics. Whatever your struggles might be, fighting these battles on your own can be difficult, painful and sometimes overwhelming. However, there is an incredible amount of power in a strong therapeutic relationship. I don't believe people are broken, we just get stuck in patterns. And part of my role is to help you discover your patterns keeping you stuck in cycles you want to change.

Sometimes life can be challenging either due to current events or past trauma. The way we make meaning of our circumstances is vital. Our feelings create our thoughts, our thoughts create our feelings, and both construct our reality. When we have the courage to face the patterns of how we think and feel, we can create a life full of meaning and value. Together, we can discover your truest self, your personal treasure, and your peace.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
