I also enjoy helping people develop strategies for managing their anxiety , including cognitive-behavioral strategies and mindfulness/relaxation techniques.
Many individuals and families have been through very difficult circumstances, including trauma. We often do not have a choice about the circumstances we face, but we can heal from these experiences and even turn them into opportunities for growth.

Whether specific or life transition, obstacles are often accompanied by other issues such as depression, anxiety , or self-esteem issues which could make you feel hesitant to discuss these issues with a counselor.
You experience challenges in life, but these issues don't define who you are. I believe everyone is on their own unique journey but sometimes the challenges become obstacles to achieving your full potential. The obstacles you face could be specific such as adjusting to chronic illness or disability, managing chronic pain, or unresolved trauma or they might be life transitions such as starting or returning to school, starting a new job, or returning to the work force.

During this day and age, stress and anxiety seem like they have never been higher. Many suffer from constant anxious thoughts that seem to bother them from the time they open their eyes to the time they go to bed. Others feel that their brain has turned against them. Still others worry that things will never get better. That's where I can help. My diverse backgrounds working within education, a major corporation, and as a counselor for the last three years, allow me to empathize and connect with clients, especially those who are employed in these sectors.

Often major themes include depression, anxiety , hopelessness and no sense of direction.
I believe that we are all placed in a specific place and time for a greater purpose. Life is hard and many of us lose our way and this leads to confusion, lonliness and often we develop addictive and maladaptive behaviors to deal with our issues. Our issues are real but we go about solving them in a nonproductive way. I help a client look at alternative ways of living often pulling from his strengths and encouraging him to incorporate spirituality as a guide. I am a Christ follower and incorporate His teaching into my own life and therapy.

There is a quote that says, “Life is a journey that is not to be feared and planned but to be traveled and enjoyed.” However, with many of us, no matter how much and succinctly we plan our life, things do not go as we plan which affects our happiness (depression) and trigger our fears ( anxiety ). Seeking help to manage the journey can make all the difference and can help with taking the focus off of the detours of the journey that causes the unhappiness while placing joy on the ability to see the lesson and beauty in the detours.

My specialties include: anxiety , stress, depression, self-esteem, family and marital issues, grief, pregnancy/adoption, career, adolescent adjustment, I use talk therapy, stress management- relaxation, mindfulness exercises, and education in my sessions, keeping in mind that it is the client in the end who chooses what works for them.
I understand that asking for emotional help is one of the more difficult things you might ever do. I tell my clients that if they were in physical discomfort or pain they would call their doctor for relief, and to call a professional counselor is also a way to insure their health and well-being. I assure my clients that with my guidance, and their hard work, whether they are dealing with a life crisis, life transition, relationship issue, ongoing issue, etc, that they do not have to remain stuck, that they can change..

I have over 15 years of experience with substance use, depression, anxiety , and trauma across community, residential, and collegiate settings.
We all experience events, whether earlier in life or more recent, that cause us to become stuck. Sometimes the cause of our symptoms is quite clear, other times it can be difficult to recognize what is causing avoidance, doubt, depression, anxiety , or escape. I empower people to identify, confront, and heal from past memories or recent experiences that lead to undesired thoughts, emotions, or behaviors. I believe people naturally move towards becoming the best versions of themselves and, with some guidance, can make choices that move them in healthy directions.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
