My counseling style has been described as caring, compassionate and effective. I have found that most clients want to be heard and accepted as they deal with personal life issues. I believe all counseling is teaching the client or couple new and better ways of enjoying their life. My wife, Linda and I have been married 57 years and have two adult children and five adult grandchildren and one great granddaughter. I was a former teacher, school counselor and athletic coach. I have a strong Christian belief and have served as an elder, trustee and Sunday School teacher.

I am gifted in working with children, teens and adults especially those struggling with grief, trauma, parental separations, and anxiety. I believe kids/people are resilient in dealing with these events if given the opportunity to do so. Children/teens often just need the unencumbered help of an empathetic adult, I offer this through play therapy sessions. I also work with adults in navigating issues such as anger, grief, parenting, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Being a parent is one of the most beautiful, rewarding, even amazing gifts of this life. Yet, it is also one of the most difficult, exhausting, and worrisome tasks given to us. Though we as parents often sacrifice and work diligently for the good of our children, sometimes our relationships with them can be strained while they struggle with anxiety, sensory concerns, overwhelming stress, or perfectionism. We as parents often feel deeply for them, but don't always know how to help. What's more, sometimes we are suffering from those same things without support of our own.

Welcome, You might be going through something that has left you feeling caught in a cycle, distanced from your self, or isolated. I work well with adults & teens wading through anxiety, trauma, relational issues, addiction, spiritual deconstruction, and life transitions, to name a few, and I see both your resilience in these but also that they can be incredibly heavy to carry. In a world that doesn’t often bring in curiosity about these things, it can be super isolating. I hope to shift that. Through acceptance and a clear path, we’ll work to get you back in your body with balance and relief to achieve the things you want to.

I work with adolescents and young adults who are thoughtful, capable, and often high achieving, but internally overwhelmed. On the outside, things may appear fine. On the inside, there's anxiety, self-doubt, relationship stress, pressure to perform, or a quiet sense of not feeling fully secure. Many of my clients are navigating identity, expectations, attachment wounds, or the weight of trying to "do life right".

I enjoy working with individuals and couples as an active participant in their journey to wellness. I utilize a cognitive behavioral therapy model that can bring further insight into individual thoughts and core beliefs. Through exploration and understanding of those, we can see how they influence our emotions and behaviors, and thus create true change in our lives. Until we make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it destiny. - Carl Jung

I believe that we are relational beings, and that health can be cultivated in intentional, honest, and reciprocal relationships that respect and reveal our inherent dignity. Because relationships with others and ourselves hold great promise and power, they can also be the focus of most of our pain as we move through life. The therapeutic relationship we build together acts as a staging ground and microcosm to help you renew the relationships you have with yourself and others in life.

Accepting New Clients: Having difficulty finding a therapist of color who understands your experience? I understand your struggle. As an African American male, I too had trouble finding a therapist of my own. Being a person of color in our society comes with its own unique experience, along with the everyday struggles and challenges we all face. It’s difficult and frustrating to have to explain this unique experience to someone before you can even address your reason for being there. But you continue searching because you know you need someone who understands your experience and can help you with life’s struggles.

I believe that in therapy, the focus should first be on learning to gain acceptance of ourselves. I feel that our beliefs about ourselves are paramount because they shape the beliefs that we have about other people and in turn, the rest of our environment. After we identify the beliefs about ourselves that need to be adjusted, we can work on how to improve those beliefs, which will improve our interactions with others and the way that we see the world. I look forward to helping others with that process.

Life sometimes doesn't go as planned and some challenges can benefit from an experienced guide. I am a specialist in treating trauma and in working with couples. I seek to help develop the tools needed by each unique client using evidence-based approaches balanced with patience, warmth, and enthusiasm. I try to meet each person where you are, discover the strengths within, and focus on helping you live a life based on what you value. I believe communication and boundaries are vital in all relationships and try to provide a supportive, encouraging, sometimes light-hearted, and non-judgmental space for exploration and healing for all.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
