During my 3 decades of experience, I have found it most helpful to use a combination of many therapeutic theories all of which are solely focused on the client and their needs.
Hi! I’m Kim Nelson, LCPC, the supervising therapist at Middleton Counseling. I have 2 beautiful daughters and 3 terrific grandchildren. I love spending time with my wonderful wife TK and our family. For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to work with people who are experiencing anxiety and depression.

My counseling style has been described as caring, compassionate and effective. I have found that most clients want to be heard and accepted as they deal with personal life issues. I believe all counseling is teaching the client or couple new and better ways of enjoying their life. My wife, Linda and I have been married 54 years and have two adult children and five adult grandchildren. I was a former teacher, school counselor and athletic coach.

I have worked with various populations, with many different views and values, but what I have currently found in this field is that we all want one thing: someone we can trust to be vulnerable with.
Welcome and thank you for visiting my page. My hope for you is that we are able to connect with each other, for me to recognize the challenges you face, and work alongside you to find what it is that you're looking for.

Many counselors are familiar with EMDR, CBT, the Gott man Method and other therapies, but few have the experience or background I bring to the table.
My ideal client is seeking positive change. They may face trauma, depression, addiction, or anxiety, but they’re not defined by these. They’re brave individuals seeking support who need a safe space to express themselves, empathy, understanding, and professional guidance. Their goals are unique. Some aim to manage symptoms better, or seek to understand their feelings’ root cause. Some want to improve relationships, others aim to build better coping mechanisms. They seek a fulfilling, balanced life, free from past chains, in control of their present and future. They seek happiness and new ways to tap into their resilience.

My passion in pursuing a career in counseling stems not just from helping people, but doing the work in making sure I help people according to their values and what will help them feel fulfilled in their life. You as the client bring me your life and all that entails, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I believe what you as the client brings to the counseling relationship provides the substance and structure for what we can build and support for your further growth and progress. I love the work and would love to help support you in what you need!

Sometimes life just sucks and we feel alone, misunderstood, and stuck. It's easy to feel embarrassed by the circumstances we find ourselves in which make it even more difficult to reach out and ask for help. Kudos to you for starting out on this journey!

We are all complex individuals, with thoughts, feelings and behaviors that arise from our everyday experiences. Sometimes life throws us challenges that are too overwhelming to handle alone. As a trauma informed and culturally sensitive therapist, I understand the importance of allowing space and time for healing in a non-judgmental space. I am well equipped to help people across the lifespan and enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families.

It is hard to take that first step into counseling for many.
When you're looking for a therapist, you want one that is prepared and knowledgeable about what you're coming in for. This is precisely why we specialize at Totius Therapies. Some of David's specialties include veterans, PTSD, couples and relationships, families, difficult child behaviors, and spirituality in counseling. David has taken lots of additional trainings in these areas and enjoys working with patients that have these concerns.

Therapy can bring us a better understanding of ourselves and how we deal with the world. Maybe you have noticed the little things getting to you more than you'd like, you aren't happy with your reactions to others, or something heavy is weighing on you. Whatever you have going on, it may help to have someone who will not only listen but will help you process and better understand how to address it. Whether you want to change some behavioral/thinking patterns, or gain some skills to cope in a more productive and helpful way, therapy can be for you.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
