For over a decade, I’ve helped young men struggling with anger, fear, and depression.
You just got into another fight with your teenage son, and you feel terrible about it. All you wanted to do was talk, to tell him that you’re worried about him, but as usual, the conversation quickly devolved into another screaming match. You feel so helpless watching him make the same mistakes over and over. Isolating himself, turning to harmful coping methods, hanging around the wrong people. You’re terrified that if he keeps going in this direction, he may never be able to dig himself out of it. As a parent, you only want him to be happy, but nothing you try seems to get through. And it feels like you’re running out of options.

As you look for a therapist you might feel very vulnerable, desperate, or fed up with your struggles. I want to help you, whatever your motivations are and however ready you are to change, whether you’re wondering if there’s a problem, you feel lost and confused, or you’re ready to change and you want to start today. At the beginning you might need a safe, accepting presence to help you view yourself clearly and with kindness. You might need someone to help you break free of painful patterns, sort out your feelings to make a tough decision, or make changes you keep trying to make but your efforts never seem to stick.

My passion is to help people rebuild their relationship with God; to thrive in sobriety. I have extensive experience with individuals that struggle with addictive and compulsive behaviors such as: sex, pornography, drugs, alcohol, codependent relationships, etc. Over the past few years, I obtained more specialized education to specifically assist with sex, pornography and lust addiction through the work of Dr. Patrick Carnes Ph.D; a pioneer in the field of sex addiction. His work combined with a method to heal relational/attachment wounds, called "IFS", is the best strategy that I have found for recovery.

Everyone who comes to counseling is experiencing some form and level of fear- whether they are fully aware of it or not. The capacity for fear serves to protect us- but limits as well. Many experience anger and not the underlying fears. Fears can lead to counter-productive behaviors that hurt the self or others in forms of passing up opportunities, as self-sabotage, and avoiding or ending relationships. It is rewarding to help people to identify, address and work through self-imposed or other-imposed limits, have healthy boundaries, achieve their goals and find deeper meaning in life.

Sometimes life gets overwhelming, hopes get waylaid by life challenges, relationships turn out not as dreamed. Sometimes the transitions in life--child to adult, single to married, married to single, working to retired--created emotional/mental barriers in our lives. Or even the challenge to figure out what your dreams are can be challenging. Therapy/coaching/ workshops/classes contain tools and information that will facilitate personal growth, healing from past trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship issues.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
