Traumatic experiences lead to trauma. That trauma deep inside of our bodies which ends up effecting most areas of our lives. The clients I have worked with, do hard work, the hardest and bravest work I have had the honor of being a part of. My client's need safety and as Gabor Mate states the "two basic human needs Authenticity and Attachment". My client's learn who they are, and what each of the identities they hold mean to them. They take power back and action through intensive trauma therapy which does not always require them to speak their traumatic experiences. My client's learn to believe in the good things coming.

Sexual Trauma: any unwanted or distressing sexual experience. Sexual Addiction: a continuum of intrusive fantasies, masturbation, or solicitation of prostitutes. Betrayal Trauma: often experienced by partners of sex addicts or other similar relationship rejections (commonly linked with PTSD). Reunification Therapy: court-involved family situations like divorce and custody. I am an informed member of AFCC. I often integrate IFS with my training in EMDR.

Please go to my website at www.RickBoyesCounseling.com for more information. A great deal of my work has been with adults who were abused as children. Sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in childhood can greatly limit the degree to which one can function fully and find fulfilling relationships. I have an endless amount of compassion for the pain that life can bring and a tremendous amount of respect for the courage that it takes to look honestly at ourselves.

I approach counseling with individuals from a personal holistic viewpoint in hopes of better understanding their world. I believe in promoting my client’s right to autonomy, self-acceptance, and to feel genuine in their experiences and connections with others. My hope as a counselor is to meet my clients where they are at and provide support for their journey, knowing that every connection made has the power to affect each of us and brings us the opportunity to make meaning in our lives. I believe there is power in the unconditional support a counseling relationship can provide.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
