Therapy is a healing journey. My role in that process is to work collaboratively with you to identify struggles and issues, and agree upon a therapeutic approach to help create hope and achieve goals that will bring about positive life changes, such as emotional healing, resiliency, improved mood, increased self-esteem, personal insight and growth, increased self-determination, effective coping skills, improved interpersonal relationships, and an increased sense of empowerment. The Certificate in Human Rights I have from BSU adds to my ability to connect with people from a multicultural perspective and with cultural competence.

It is common for people to say therapy hasn’t helped much and in many cases has even made things worse. Understandably, this increases people’s fear and doubt about therapy being able to help them. I find that most therapy is ineffective and most therapist are poorly trained. Because of this, I have been deeply committed to becoming a much better therapist providing the most modern and effective therapeutic approaches. The people I work with regularly report more significant energy, relief, and sense of lightness. They also tend to share that the process was quick, effective, and enjoyable. I specialize in working with professionals, people who feel stuck in a career about which they have no passion, especially people floundering in a corporate existence; uncomfortable in a family and home life that is dissatisfying – feeling trapped by the socioeconomic responsibilities they chose to pursue when they were too young and inexperienced to be setting down permanent life-tracks, tracks that now feel more like ruts from which there is no escape.

The client-counselor relationship-which, in my opinion, is the most critical element of the entire process-is what determines whether therapy is effective. I strive hard to provide a welcoming, honest, and secure environment that, hopefully, fosters a sense of security and encourages open communication. Understanding the meaning and purpose in life can be complicated at times. My objectives and ambitions are to build relationships in which talking about the obstacles to realize your actual purpose in life becomes relatively normal. Working with people and helping them become their best selves is something that I appreciate.

Life seems to be about meeting people, developing relationships, and leaving and letting go of those same important relationships. I've been a therapist for twenty years and more and am still amazed and humbled by the healing power of the therapeutic relationship.

A psychiatrist with whom I work has described my therapeutic style as "artistic".
Mine is not a sing-songy, head weaving, "how does that make you feel?" therapeutic approach. Rather, I respect the fact that my patients are presenting problems that necessitated their appointment. Problems have solutions.
This is important work. I believe therapy should be an active process. My sessions are almost always active and highly engaging. This is the work of solution discovery. I believe people have their own answers. These answers reside within them. We actively and collaboratively seek these answers.

I have been working in the mental health field for 16 years. People who want to focus on discovering their inner strengths and understanding how those attributes can help them overcome their current challenges will benefit greatly from my techniques. I use a strength- based team approach which simply means I see counseling as a partnership between the people I work with and myself. I believe life is a journey and together we can make the most out of yours.

Seeking help can feel overwhelming and scary, but it is often the first step towards healing. In the growth process, it is critical to have a warm and perceptive guide to provide tools, insight, and safety. As unhealthy relationships damage, healthy relationships heal. The therapeutic alliance has over and over again been found to be one of the most influential factors in producing positive change. My aim is to build that alliance and work with you towards wellness.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
