Your symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger are your body's way of telling you something's not right! As a child, you may have experienced some sort of failure in your relationships or environment. As a child you compensate for these traumas by creating strategies for survival. Maybe you are a perfectionist, or maybe you find that you give more than you receive, or perhaps you just feel disconnected from yourself and everyone around you? The pain you are experiencing is real, and coping with it just isn't working anymore.

Clients are welcomed into my space where ever they are in terms of understanding, self-awareness, and emotion-- anger , tearfulness, confusion--all are accepted as part of the process. Sessions focus on the 'here and now' while also exploring historical issues being triggered and mis-managed. I confront irrational thinking and help clients re-script their less-than-helpful language around feeling 'not good enough,' 'broken,' or 'lost.' Ultimately, clients can expect to focus on their issues--whatever they may be--and will, in the process, come to feel genuinely known, accepted, and not so alone in the process of their lives.

For over a decade, I’ve helped young men struggling with anger , fear, and depression.
You just got into another fight with your son, and you feel terrible about it. All you wanted to do was talk, to tell him that you’re worried about him, but as usual, the conversation quickly devolved into another standstill. You feel so helpless watching him make the same mistakes over and over. Isolating himself, turning to harmful coping methods, hanging around the wrong people. You’re terrified that if he keeps going in this direction, he may never be able to dig himself out of it. As a parent, you only want him to be happy, but nothing you try seems to get through. And it feels like you’re running out of options.

I have experience helping clients with anxiety and depression, trauma, grief and loss, major life transition, issues with anger , and other emotional difficulties.
I work with individuals, couples, and groups who believe personal change is possible and valuable in their lives. I use an emotion focused approach, as put forth in the work of Dr. Les Greenberg, and have received formal training in Dr. Sue Johnson's Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. I believe that people are agents of their own positive change, and that many are unaware of how emotions relate to their thoughts and behavior. My clinical practice has taught me to respect the experience, worldview, and value system of others without imposing my own, and I am LGBTQ affirming.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
