I believe that in therapy, the focus should first be on learning to gain
acceptance
of ourselves. I feel that our beliefs about ourselves are paramount because they shape the beliefs that we have about other people and in turn, the rest of our environment. After we identify the beliefs about ourselves that need to be adjusted, we can work on how to improve those beliefs, which will improve our interactions with others and the way that we see the world. I look forward to helping others with that process.

I prefer using strength-based approaches including Person Centered, Solution Focused, Narrative, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and
Acceptance
and Commitment Therapy to help clients identify, utilize and increase personal strengths to resolve difficult circumstances and manage their emotions.
I enjoy working with clients of all ages, genders, orientations, and backgrounds as they navigate through the challenges of life. I believe that everyone's story is unique and that it needs to be told in a comfortable and safe place, free of judgement. Many of the clients I work with come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, vulnerable, afraid of making changes, and/or wondering how they will make it through the unexpected changes they are faced with. Some have experienced trauma. I help clients understand why they are suffering from certain symptoms as well as help them identify maladaptive thinking and coping skills.

l I've found people do the best they can with what they've got. Coming to therapy takes courage to find a new way of being. While figuring out what is working well, and where adjustments are needed, we will have fun, too. Rather than simply listening to you, or asking about your feelings, I tend toward questions about thoughts and actions. It's okay if you don't know yet what needs to change. We will make plans together to meet goals we set in the first few sessions. These will focus on changing thoughts and behaviors that aren't helpful or effective.

The fact that you are reading this speaks volumes about you already in that you are stepping into the uncomfortable space where change begins. Let's face it - we human beings do not like change by nature, so the journey you are considering is, in and of itself, an
act
of courage and that needs to be celebrated! So, now that you've read this far, I would like to invite you to join me in exploring the next chapter of your life's journey. I firmly believe we all yearn for meaning and purpose and distress in many forms has the capability to blind us from seeing our intended path.

Counseling can be both an exciting and scary adventure kind of like getting on a rollercoaster, delighted for the ride but filled with butterflies. You’re looking for
acceptance
, and connection. You feel unloved, alone, or fight to understand your emotions. You desire the ability to stand up for yourself, create healthy relationships, and set boundaries. With the ever-growing pressure of societal expectations, you aim for perfection but often fall short of the finish line. The word balance brings hope; you ache for the ability to feel firmly rooted in who you are, gracefully adjust to change, and find steadiness in your thoughts.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
