I worked as a social worker in Child Welfare for 21 years helping families and children work through issues of abuse and neglect to improve their relationships. Prior to that I worked doing couples and individual counseling. Earlier in my career, I also taught elementary school and worked in a group home. I believe in using therapy to empower individuals to find mental and emotional well-being and increased quality of life. I am a lifelong learned who loves to research the newest trends in mental and emotional well-being and utilize techniques to help strengthen families, couples, and individuals.

The client that Kathleen works well with is youth (age 7 - teens) with trauma, divorce of parents, placement in foster care, adoption, or residential care, or who are involved in (or at risk) the juvenile justice system. Kathleen enjoys working with a variety of brain health (mental health) issues - depression, bipolar, PTSD, ADHD, ODD, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, and schizophrenia. Kathleen's focus is youth & family, but she also works with young adults transitioning out of foster care, & women wanting EMDR. Kathleen is trained in Amen Clinic's method, & provides evidence based tools to change your brain and change your life.

Accepting New Clients starting…Making the decision and moving forward with seeking therapy is a huge step and usually, it’s the biggest challenge in therapy. Not accepting clients. Populations I really enjoy working with are youth (ages 13+) and young adults. I feel this has definitely become my niche as this tends to be a transition period for youth with learning who they are as an individual, finding their voice, peer/school pressure, and social media. As well young adults (18-30) what I notice is this age group really struggles with boundary setting as they are transitioning from being under their parents to being an adult. I also enjoy helping them with identification of values and beliefs what are important to them, follow through and helping them learn to have healthy habits.

My name is Karen Canfield I am an Idaho girl and grew up in the Boise area. I have been married for 39 years and have 3 children and one granddaughter. I went to Boise State University and graduated with my undergraduate degree as well as my Masters degree. I have been a mental health counselor in the Treasure Valley for the last 22 years.
