Hello, my name is Stephanie Breitenstein. I'm licensed to practice in Idaho and Arizona and I have been practicing for 11 years. I would say that I teach perspective and self-acceptance. I help people develop their own insight and help them navigate their emotions. We all have a level of intuition that is waiting for us to become aware of it. By filtering out preconceived notions about how we think we should be, we are able to move toward a more peaceful way of being.

Hello and thank you for viewing my bio. There are many reasons to enlist a psychotherapist or counselor, including seeking a better understanding of yourself, following a path of self-discovery, looking for hope and support, or stepping more powerfully into yourself to live the life you wish to have. Since our relationships are so core to engaging our biggest selves, talking with a therapist can often help identify our personal patterns of relating in a way that may help us begin to enjoy more satisfying relationships.

In my practice, I work with adolescents, children and adults. My specialties include: relationship problems, adolescent development, health psychology, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, learning disabilities and attentional problems. Infertility counseling is also a special interest of mine, including third party reproduction issues (donor and surrogacy). My therapeutic approach varies depending on the issues with which you are struggling and who you are as a person. I don't have one approach that fits all clients but tailor my work to the individual. In general, I help clients identify and enhance their current psychological strengths in order to address their problems.

Therapy should be something we grow to look forward to- the connection, the insight, the growth, and the support. At its core, it is a relationship in which you feel safe, cared for, seen, and validated. From there, I believe you can tackle whatever it is you show up for! It inspires me that growth and change continue through the entire life cycle, to our final days. I enjoy walking alongside clients struggling with the aging process, their relationships, their boundaries and self worth, and tender childhood wounds. I operate from an attachment oriented and interpersonal neurobiological approach.

Teenagers are living through exceptionally complicated times, so it's no surprise that their struggles have become common. I have focused on working with teenagers struggling to overcome a variety of emotional, behavioral, and social challenges for the past 25 years. I am the Owner of Alpine Behavioral Health, where I was also previously Clinical Director for many years. In addition to outpatient counseling, I have worked with at-risk teenagers at a wilderness therapy program in West Virginia and a working cattle ranch in eastern Idaho. I have also led international therapeutic adventure trips to Central and South America.

I was originally trained as a generalist therapist. This means I am able to work efficiently with a wide range of clients. My specialty is with those who have faced identity based trauma. Identity based trauma includes experiencing trauma on the basis of being in a marginalized community such as race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.. I also specialize in workplace fatigue/stress. I acknowledge our society encourages a growing list of demands with little compensation or value to care/rest. I help these individuals find a balance in their routine.

My approach to therapy is, first and foremost, about the relationship between the therapist and client. Acceptance, compassion, and respect are the building blocks of a therapeutic relationship. I believe in developing a trusting, accepting, and empathetic relationship, focusing on the strengths of the client. My master's education was completed at the University of Denver where I gained unparralleled clinical skills that help me provide the best care to meet client needs. My passion for people, paticularly women, who have experienced trauma grew as I worked at internships helping victims of sexual trauma and their families.

Coming to counseling does not mean you are broken, it means you have made a courageous choice to heal. I see humans as extraordinary beings who have the capacity to look inward to find the places most in need of love, compassion, and acceptance. Together, we create the world in which you will shine the brightest. Looking at yourself through a holistic lens where we connect the mind, body, an spirit, you can heal yourself. This modality offers an efficient and effective process to healing that is extraordinary. In November of 2022, I hosted my first Women's Healing and Empowerment Yoga Therapy workshop. It was so magical! Join me!

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Boise?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
