Welcome! I am an integrative therapist with a dual focus on alleviating current, distressing symptoms and working toward life-long changes to improve the overall quality of your life. I enjoy getting to know you as a whole individual and feel developing the therapeutic relationship can create a safe and supportive environment so that you can feel completely comfortable to get your needs met in therapy. Although I was originally trained as a generalist, I have specialized training and expertise in the treatment of eating disorders, trauma/abuse and relationship concerns.
I am passionate about helping people deal with ongoing emotional struggles that they just can't seem to get past. Clients that are willing to engage the hard work of personal development by immersing themselves in the therapeutic process are my most rewarding clients with which to work. As an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) since 2006, I am passionate about addressing spiritual issues with clients as well. You might receive a quicker response from me by texting me at 515-227-0334 and thanks!
My practice offers a calm, supportive atmosphere for clients to share their concerns. I provide counseling for individuals at all stages of life experiencing stress from life transitions (such as college, job loss/change, empty nest, retirement, recent move), anxiety, depression, serious illness, relationship concerns including divorce/end of relationships and grief. I welcome those seeking to increase their own understanding of the family dynamics/patterns at work in their family of birth as well as current family or friendship circle. I also provide guidance for those desiring to change/improve communication within their lives.
I provide an environment that is calm, supportive, and empathetic to meet you where you are in your life’s journey. I work with children, teens, and adults through methods such as play therapy techniques, cognitive behavioral, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and person-centered.
We are here to walk with you when you need it most. Lutheran Family Service (LFS) has an expert team of compassionate therapists and counselors to help you with marital and relationship problems, depression and suicidal thoughts, anxiety and worry, trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality disorders, grief and loss, parenting concerns, life transitions, work and career concerns, or chronic mental illness.
Counseling doesn’t have to be so uptight, am I right? I approach therapy in an informal, nonthreatening way. I’m happy to inspire a laugh—or to just lend an ear. I accept my clients as they are, but I also help them find the courage to transform into who they want to be. Life is too short to be anything but authentic. I spent 23 years as a newspaper feature writer before changing careers. I fully recognize that I’m no longer the author of someone else’s story. Rather, I want my clients to look at the narrative of their lives and decide, for themselves, the direction their own story takes. I only hope to facilitate the process.
Welcome! As a trauma focused therapist, my specialty is with individuals who have experienced victimization or exposure to violence, including law enforcement and military. Using a multi-focused approach, I aim to reduce immediate stressors and increase your quality of life. I am straightforward, use gentle humor within my practice, and will always help clients explore all of their options so they can make informed decisions. I also have experience with issues such as post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, family conflict, stress, life transitions, thought disorders and relationship conflict.
LGBTQ-plus welcome! Let's face it, it's been a rough couple of years. So many of us are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, irritable, or even depressed and not sure why. Suddenly, we have noticed those bottles of wine going faster, our tempers growing shorter, and the stress piling up. Everyone needs something from you, but you've given so much already and aren't sure where to refill yourself. Or/and perhaps you are a member of a marginalized community and facing additional stresses and obstacles in our society. Maybe it's time to talk to someone to help process all of these feelings and achieve some peace for yourself.
Welcome, you have made the decision to begin moving forward in a positive direction. A direction toward growth and well-being. While we cannot change difficult situations of the past, we can move forward to ensure a better present, and a thriving future. I have over 10 years in the Mental Health industry, and I am a active listener and goal oriented; as we move forward on your goals, we will be using complementary therapeutic approaches and techniques to facilitate the desired change. Remember, "You are on a road to a better place!"
As a former high school educator, I'm passionate about helping adolescents who are experiencing anxiety, stress, and self-esteem issues. I have special interests in working with student athletes, LGBTQ clients, and those in faith transitions. I also use my background as a yoga teacher to incorporate mindfulness and meditation techniques, when these approaches serve the client.
I feel it is a privilege to meet with people of all ages and backgrounds who are willing to seek professional input regarding their personal situations. I work with children, adolescents, families, and individual adults to address a variety of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, stress, family issues, learning difficulties, life transitions, and parenting.
Sometimes we know that certain things in our lives need to change, and we may not know where to start or how to make progress toward our goals. Therapy can help individuals examine where they are, what they are struggling with, and help them create a plan to begin making changes in their lives and/or in their relationships. Trauma, anxiety, or stressful life events can make things feel overwhelming but finding a therapist you can connect with is the first step.
