I believe that counseling is a process whereby a client voluntarily seeks to resolve interpersonal, emotional, and/or spiritual difficulties with the assistance of another caring individual. I will seek to empower you to make changes for the betterment of your life through a wellness model. I will do my best to offer you the highest ethical standards of care, to listen empathically to you, to persist in hope, to believe in your restoration, and to avoid all forms of judgement. My goal is for you to develop fresh perspectives, to bolster your self confidence in your existing capabilities, and to form a feasible plan of action.

Hi, I'm Pete. Therapy can mean different things to different people depending on your perspective. From mine, I'm here to help you reach the goals you're shooting for, and I'm not here to waste your time or tell you things you already know. I'll give you everything I've got to help you get where you're going. Relationship in real trouble? Feeling like you can't figure out who you are or want to be? Sounds heavy. I help with heavy.

Life can feel messy, heavy, or uncertain- and that’s okay. Therapy is a space where you get to be fully yourself: defining what’s working, what’s not, and where you want to go. It’s rooted in real connection, not quick fixes, and guided by the belief that healing isn’t about fixing what’s broken, but rediscovering what’s already inside of you- resilience, clarity, and the strength to move forward. All parts of you are welcome- the messy, the heavy, and the hard to name. If anxiety, grief, trauma, or life changes leave you stuck, therapy can help you find your way.

Therapy dissects life occurrences and issues and identifies the obstacles that may be limiting personal performance. Once the obstacles are identified, emotional growth can occur through a process of learning to adapt or removing negative thinking. My job, as a therapist, is to support my clients' feelings and thoughts, while at the same time to encourage the transformation of those emotions and thoughts toward the pursuit of a fuller, more satisfying life.

Pain, illness, and trauma can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself, your body, your relationships, and the life you want to be living. Healing is rarely just mental or emotional; it is whole-person work. I believe true healing involves the mind, body, emotions, relationships, and spirit, while honoring the brain and body’s natural ability to heal. My approach is rooted in the belief that you already hold wisdom within you. You may not always feel connected to it, especially when life has been painful, overwhelming, or unpredictable, but it is there. I help you uncover direction and reconnect with your capacity for growth.

I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy by gaining a deeper understanding of themselves. We’re all complex beings and it can be difficult to see that we have the capacity in ourselves to improve our lives. Our futures are in our hands, and exploring our identities, backgrounds, and aspirations can enhance our life experiences. As a former teacher and coach, I've seen how much people desire connection, guidance, and understanding in their lives. In my practice as a marriage and family therapist, I aim to honor your experiences, create a safe space for healing, and navigate this journey together. Mornings available!

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
