Feeling overwhelmed, anxious or depressed? You may feel physical discomfort in your chest, head or stomach. You constantly worry about the what ifs. You worry excessively about what others might think of you. You accommodate everyone else's needs because setting boundaries and saying "NO" makes you feel guilty. So you find yourself taking on more and more, constantly telling yourself "I should've done better" or "I could have done more." You feel down and you're always exhausted. You find yourself getting angry or resentful but don't understand why. You NEVER ask for help. And it's become too much lately.

Experience matters. I have over 25 years of experience working in the mental health field, where experience is vital because life is complicated. And our mind can often be a battlefield. My experience includes working in schools, churches, the military, non-profits and private practice. I specialize in working with adults having difficulty with anxiety, depression, relationships, challenging circumstances, employment stressors, loneliness and loss. The life we lead does stem from the thoughts we think, so it's helpful to not underestimate the power of our mind for good but also for our detriment. The good news is we can choose.

My ideal client is someone who is looking to work through emotional issues in a safe and accepting space. They come to therapy wanting to address their emotional distress, find healthy solutions to difficult problems, and gain self-confidence in managing their emotions. They may need help in recognizing and expressing their feelings, exploring and understanding the impact of their past, and in improving their interpersonal skills. They may have experienced trauma and need help in understanding and dealing with the symptoms it can bring. Ultimately, my client seeks help in creating a more fulfilling life with healthy relationships.

Uncertainty about your future, relationships, and career may be leaving you feeling helpless, out of control, and disconnected from who you want to be. Constant focus on making the right decisions or choices leads you to second guess yourself at every turn. This can leave you feeling lost, stuck, and completely unsure of yourself. You are probably exhausted from the constant “what ifs” and all the pressure you put on your shoulders. It can also get tricky setting boundaries when you tend to put others needs above your own. You know something needs to change but maybe you’re not sure where to start.

Every human has the ability to heal. Sometimes, traumatic life experiences make that feel impossible to happen. You feel broken or unfixable. Maybe you ask yourself why you never feel quite good enough. Therapy can seem scary or uncomfortable, but it can be a wonderful start to healing and betterment. Asking for help is okay. As your therapist, my goal is to create a nonjudgmental environment that provides compassion, encouragement, and ultimately the support you need to begin the healing process.

Hi there and congratulations on taking the sometimes daunting step towards finding a therapist. I don't know you, but I know that takes courage. My style as a therapist can be described as collaborative, curious, responsive, warm, and above all else, human. Although we are all experiencing this wild ride called life, I know that no two stories or individuals are the same. I am genuinely curious about my clients and what makes them who they are, which leads way to individualized care and true understanding.

Through integrating numerous systemic therapy techniques, my collaborative approach aims to uncover dysfunctional patterns that perpetuate or contribute to destructive loops. In a warm, collaborative atmosphere where feedback about the process is communicated, my tailored approach allows my clients to cope with extreme stressors. It cultivates an environment that allows them to function authentically.

When faced with overwhelming anxiety, depression or other mental health needs, it is hard to know where to turn at times. Talking to your family, friends or co-workers helps, sometimes, but you want to feel safe, free to say what's on your mind without feeling judged. Perhaps you are or have been traumatized at some time in your life and you just can't seem to get the confidence to be your own person. Seeking a therapist can be scary, and feel like a huge task, but it does not have to be when you have the right person to guide you through the forest to achieve your best self.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
