Life can be really chaotic, unfair, overwhelming, and/or conflicting. Relationships with our significant other, children, extended family, and even friends can get difficult and hard to maintain how you want. You can end up feeling pretty lonely, or you might feel lost not knowing which direction to turn is the best. Sometimes it feels like there is so much that has happened it's hard to know what it is that is causing all the feelings. There is hope to move from the extremes and create a happy balance - to live from our calling, strengths, hopes, and dreams again.

I believe psychotherapy should be a transformational experience. We often get stuck in patterns of relating and being that, at one time, were adaptive and protective, but no longer help us to be our best selves. Psychotherapy helps to understand those patterns, develop strategies to disrupt them, and create new ways of being and relating that get us closer to our personal and professional goals.

From the outside looking in, everything about your life looks "perfect". But you know every day is spent trying to hold it all together. The dreams and plans you created feel frail and seem to be crumbling around you. You constantly catch yourself thinking "It's not supposed to be this way". Every day is exhausting as you work to do it all "right". You want to return to a place of joy, and peace. You want to know that there is still hope. You want a therapist who understands the stresses and strains of life and can help you rediscover joy. I am your person. I can help you sift through the hurts and rediscover the joy within.

Life has a way of bringing us to our knees at times. It can feel completely overwhelming to navigate the emotions and experiences that come with being human. The good news is, you don't have to do it alone. I’d love to help you learn to process emotion in a way that fosters acceptance and healing. I specialize in working with adult individuals struggling with grief, anxiety, trauma, body image, life transitions (ie: college, parenthood, divorce, spiritual deconstruction), and caregivers of children with special needs. I work with clients from religious and non-religious contexts.

Family: can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Except, maybe you are losing sleep over how to put distance between yourself and the dysfunction in your family. You love your family and now recognize there were aspects about your upbringing that are not conducive to your overall well-being. You don’t want to replicate this same dysfunction now. However, some of these dysfunctional patterns have become so ingrained throughout the years, or you think, “I’m just like my parents.” Whether that is trouble communicating, reacting with anger, or lack of affection, it can be difficult to undo what you were taught or observed.

LGBTQ+ people experience many different situations and circumstances that are unique to the LGBT community. Your gender and orientation doesn't define you, but it does play a large role in your life and impacts many different other issues that you may face. You deserve a counselor who not only understands this, but also knows how to incorporate a person's whole self into counseling and addresses the specific challenges unique to the LGBTQ+ Community.

If you feel overwhelmed or lost, therapy can lead you to a better path and healthier future. Many people struggle for years before asking for help. Are panic attacks keeping you from doing things that you want to do? Are you walking around with a trauma history that you have never fully dealt with? Imagine being able to live the life you want to live without being shackled by emotional limitations.

My focus is on creating a treatment plan based on the individual client’s needs, strengths, resources and goals. Helping people get connected with their community and other professional resources that will help them reach their goals more effectively is critical. I work well with both men's challenges and and women's issues. We often get closed in by a set of assumptions about ourselves and our relationships that keep us from reaching truly attainable changes. It is exciting to watch the growth and change that people are able to make as they discover hidden resources for transformation within themselves.

Making the decision to contact a therapist is not always easy. There may be fear of judgment or of the unknown. I applaud those who take the first step to seek help for issues they are struggling with. Anxiety, depression and self-harm, to name a few, have become such common struggles in our society. Therapy can be a place to explore your life, take a look at your experiences and build skills to help improve your future. Sometimes, everyone needs help weeding through those difficult times when things can become confusing or overwhelming. My goal is to walk with clients through this process and toward their goals.

I work as a partner with my clients to gain or restore a healthy balance individually and within the context of their relationships. I work with the whole person from a humanistic and systems perspective. We do not live in a vacuum, therefore each and every person is connected to others somehow in relationship, whether that relationship is healthy, conflicted or estranged and whether that relationship is with family, friends or colleagues. There is great value in working with an unbiased professional to help identify patterns and ways of relating that are possibly holding us back from living the life we desire.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
