My approach is eclectic and grounded in relational, existential and humanistic psychology approaches.
I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, conflict, or issues of identity, especially those in the queer and/or neurodiverse communities. My goal for clinical work together is to provide a safe space to build upon existing strengths, foster self-compassion and self-understanding, and be a true collaborator in the exploration of conscious or unconscious thoughts, behaviors, feelings and reactions that may be holding you back from feeling well. I hope to promote true change together through a supportive, accepting, caring, educational and encouraging therapeutic relationship.

In particular, I often draw from humanistic psychology, systems theory, and existentialism in the exploration of self-actualization and addressing barriers.
I believe in the importance of feeling connected in relationships, to our environment, and to ourselves. Addressing the “here and now” that arises during therapy allows our sessions to adapt and work with the difficult emotions or thoughts that come up, in an environment that is judgment free and safe. I specialize in working with those who are experiencing anxiety, depression, agoraphobia, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem issues, grief and chronic pain, among other issues. I am LGBTQIA+, gender-affirming, and enjoy working with clients along the spectrum of neurodiversity and disability.

My approach is primarily cognitive/behavioral and most of my training is in CBT, DBT and ACT but I also draw on other modalities including IFS, art therapy, ecological, and humanistic approaches.
I assist clients in building skills and acquiring tools to align their life with their values and vision. I help clients identify their own strengths and wisdom to effectively face life's challenges, achieve goals and create lasting changes. I consider the social and cultural factors that impact each person's ways of being, how they are treated in this world, and how they adapt to difficult experiences. I offer a collaborative, non-judgmental, creative and hopeful space that is conducive to self-exploration and transformation.

I draw on several approaches for treatment including EMDR, mindfulness-based CBT, and traditional talk therapy, tailoring my practice toward the needs of each person. I use a humanistic attachment lens informed by interpersonal neurobiology. I primarily work with people who have complex intersections of identity and those who have experienced trauma. The trauma may surface through symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or difficulty managing relationships. I work with a lot of individuals who have experienced complex trauma, developmental trauma, a single traumatic event, emotional neglect, and physical neglect.

Humanistic psychology and family systems are the base of much of the psychotherapy that I offer.
I offer an integrative approach to individuals and couples seeking solutions and insight into their life challenges. Client centered psychotherapy is where I begin for concerns such as anxiety and depression, post-traumatic stress, family concerns, relationship issues, difficulties with self-esteem, grief and loss, or life transition. I work with couples, individual adults, and adolescents. I am also interested in strengths, and what is working in your life, as a way to sort out how to support the growth and changes you wish to make.

My approach to counseling involves elements of humanistic theory, experiential and existential therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Gay Affirmative Therapy, mindfulness, and family systems and multicultural theories.
My work empowers clients by helping them find clarity amidst the chaos of distractions that impede engagement in their present experience. I believe the fundamental vehicle of change is the relationship between the counselor and the client. For me, therapy is a collaborative approach in which the therapist helps clients confront issues by staying present and exploring their narratives and relationships through different dynamics and perspectives.

We seek out therapy when we are looking for a change. It might be that coping which once worked no longer does, that there is a new stressor in our life, or that an old wound is still impacting us. Therapy can be helpful in getting unstuck when we are struggling to envision the next step forward. As a trauma-informed therapist, I approach my work with the belief that compassion, trust, and authenticity are fundamental for positive change. I view therapy as a collaborative process, one where therapist and client work together to determine goals, identify needs, and outline a path forward.

Hello, my name is Gabe Guth and I'm so happy you're here! Sometimes the hardest part about self-care is just getting started and you've already completed that often difficult first step. I love working with individuals who have never been in therapy before to help demystify the process and create an understanding of why therapy can be so effective. Currently, I work with individuals experiencing concerns such as loss, depression, shame, social anxiety, and life transitions such as starting school or changing careers.

Many of us feel out of step with others around us. Difficulties with completing tasks and organization lead to struggles and frustration in relationships. Difficulty with social skills and anxiety make it hard to reach out to others for friendship or dating. Some of us feel shame and isolation from ADHD, autism, and other forms of neurodiversity. Our unique hobbies or interests keep us out of step. Shame keeps us from exploring who we are in friendships, dating, and sexually. People often do not see us. We feel alone. This manifests as depression, anxiety, and difficulty regulating our emotions.

For me, “psychotherapy has to do with…people playing together.” My therapeutic approach is grounded in practicality, metaphor, and paradox. Whether you want to examine your relationship to archetypes and epic tales, investigate the mundane and extraordinary beauty in doing the dishes, or delve into your style of relating to another being: bring all of it - it is welcome and deserving of your attention. Fundamentally, I am fascinated by people - our stories, our journeys and our capacities for grace and awe.

Everyone experiences anxiety, depression, and loss at sometime in their life. Often events and people happen in our lives that cause distress. No one deserves to be in pain and no one should have to endure when there is the possibility to reduce the pain. My goal is to help my clients find relief through self exploration and a desire to want to feel better. My job is to walk with my clients in their path to mindfulness. My goal is to provide a safe space for emotions to be expressed and validated without judgment. Together we will identify patterns and triggers, and create skills to reduce future emotional distress.

Do you feel overstimulated by others' energy throughout your day or week? You may have noticed that you have a stronger emotional response than those close to you (both positive & negative). Or maybe, you find yourself so focused on your responsibilities that you struggle to enjoy the journey. We often find ourselves isolating or masking just to cope with impossible feelings. Through counseling, you can face these challenges and decrease the stress, anxiety, and even relationship bumps that you might be experiencing.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
