I've worked with individuals from many walks of life throughout my years of practice most of whom have experienced trauma and struggle with mood instability, anxiety, personality disorders, and/or attachment and relationship disruption. Most of my clients are some combination of neurodivergent, queer, trans, non-monogamous, and/or kinky. My practice is driven by a deeply held belief in the power of relationships to cultivate positive change and healing. This begins with the therapeutic relationship which I give ongoing attention and priority to as maintaining the therapeutic alliance is essential for successful treatment.

Does acknowledging your own needs trigger your inner critic and feelings of guilt? I am a seasoned cognitive behavioral therapist with additional specialization in pregnancy/postpartum mental health and couples therapy. As social beings, our relationships can be powerful catalysts for personal healing and growth. Many former clients describe how deepening intimate bonds in the present brings healing to past wounds and long-held insecurities.

My counseling philosophy is that all clients are unique and must have an inclusive and accepting environment where they can grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. It is my desire to create the type of mutually respectful atmosphere that makes room for clients to be active participants in change, improved communication, and increased self-awareness. I provide a safe space where clients are invited to share ideas, take risks, feel heard -and sometimes challenged- in the way they currently experience life. “People are not problems to be solved, they are mysteries to be explored”. EH Peterson

For so many people, our childhoods were not "good enough, safe enough." Maybe our caregivers were tricky and lacked the capacity to allow us full human experiences as children, and now our bodies are holding that pain. For some of us, we bonded with what was available- substances, food, sex, pain. For all of us, our emotions and behaviors make sense within the context of who we are and what we've been through. And we have survived the worst. Some of our behaviors may not be helping the way they once did. Together, we can start fulfilling the unmet needs that are underneath those behaviors so that you can grow in meaningful ways.

Lemon (therapy assistant pictured in photo) and I are accepting new clients in 2024! I’m not your typical talk-therapist. I am dynamic in the sense that I’ve been trained in many different evidenced-based models, theories, and techniques, but the therapy that I provide derives from what is needed most by the client sitting in front of me. I’m fun, energetic and real. I don’t mind being direct when necessary, and I think it’s okay to sometimes disclose information about myself;after all, the passion and interest that I have for helping others is directly related to my lived experience of trying to ground myself in an unsettled world.

I believe in transformation - yours (and mine), and that the draw towards the good is irresistible. Whatever challenges you face, there’s a way forward. How you see yourself - and those around you - can make all the difference. I want to know your story, how you tell it, and where you hope it will go. You’ll have a partner as you navigate life transitions and circumstances, learn to better manage difficult thoughts and feelings, change patterns that no longer serve you, and improve relationships. As your unfoldment happens (and yes, it's always messy), you’ll have an ally in this incredibly difficult yet doable work.

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
