Routinely, I help clients with adjustment/stress, depression/bipolar, anxiety, OCD/hoarding, parenting, relationship problems, trauma, and health psychology (addiction, TBI, women's health).
I believe life's challenges are opportunities for us to grow as human beings. Whether you or a family member are struggling with an old problem that keeps coming back or facing an entirely new problem, there is hope. I use research based assessments and treatments to help you or your family member overcome these concerns and thrive in your life.

People are unique human beings with a long list of remarkable qualities. Sometimes though, we feel that we have qualities that we need to work on to be our better selves. I work with individuals to find those qualities and strengthen the ones we want to stay around. You may be a good fit for me if you: have ADHD, have children, are a family with adult children in the home, are a lifelong learner, are tired of looking at the positive side all the time, and willing to work on your problems in and out of therapy!

I focus on learning who a person is uniquely, and I take an active role in treatment, offering genuine warmth and support as well as practical feedback. I draw from various theoretical approaches but commonly use cognitive behavioral therapy, mindful self-compassion, exposure response prevention, and internal family systems. As a licensed clinical social worker I have had the pleasure of working in cities across the United States with a wide range of individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

People who see me for individual therapy are usually facing turmoil either due to current stressors or past issues that keep surfacing and prevent them from moving forward in their lives. Often, people tell me that they feel "stuck" and need direction/guidance. By working with me they identify their inner strengths and capabilities; they feel confident in themselves to take on challenges that come their way. In therapy we identify things that should change because what clients are doing currently is not helping. I problem solve and discuss ways to make their present meaningful. My strength based approach resonates with clients.

Sometimes life feels overwhelming and out of control. In these moments, it can be challenging to manage your thoughts and feelings, but you don’t have to face them alone. I am empathetic and patient, and I strive to create a warm and non-judgmental environment. My hope is that by the time you feel comfortable ending therapy, you will have gained self-awareness and will have an easier time with your daily challenge.

Hoarding Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?

Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?

The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?

Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
