Finding the best fit for a new therapist can be challenging and scary as you step into a place of vulnerability. My experience has provided me with the opportunity to work with those who suffer from severe mental illness and substance abuse over the last 10 years in various settings. I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families who suffer from symptoms of depression, anxiety, other mood disorders, personality disorders, and thought disorders, as well as, those who suffer from trauma (ie. childhood attachment related issues or various relational traumas).

We all differ in meaningful ways, and therefore, therapy is different with each person. With careful, non-judgmental, and respectful listening, I hope you will feel deeply understood and hopeful, and we will be able to work together in a genuine, collaborative way. I work with adults with different difficulties and emotional struggles like depression, anxiety, trauma, identity, relationship issues, LGBT, cancer, life transitions and losses. Being of an international background and past military service, I value diversity and am deeply attuned to your unique background (cultural, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation) and its effect on your individuality.

It can feel overwhelming and frustrating that no matter what you do, you still struggle with difficult emotions seeming in control over you. Maybe it's been hard to even find the motivation to get started with therapy due to feeling stuck, hopeless, and not seeing a way out. You've read books and have had previous experience in therapy, but neither of these have seemed to have worked to help you sort out the difficulties you are experiencing; causing further isolation and leaving you feeling anxious, depressed, and/or angry.

I was born and raised in Knoxville, TN. I did my training in Houston, Texas, where I lived for 24 years. I've been in practice for over 15 years. I am a strong Christian. But I only do Christian counseling when asked to do so. I am very LGBT friendly. I believe everybody deserves dignity and respect. We could all use a little help sometimes. I work best with people who are open to feedback and able to discuss concerns without judgment or reserve.

(Currently have waitlist) Some people feel stuck and unable to move past their worry, sadness, trauma, or grief. Others aren't quite sure why they feel the way they do, but know they want to feel differently. Coming to therapy can be a daunting and scary task, and finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming. My aim is to help people along their journey of becoming un-stuck and finding clarity. This process is easiest when patients feel comfortable opening up and do not have to fear being judged for their inner thoughts.

It takes courage to do what you are doing, and I commend you for taking the first step. Fear, anxiety, grief, and depression are emotions that we all experience. They aren’t unusual, but at times they can feel like a runaway train, stealing your thoughts, time, energy and happiness. I work together with my clients on managing and regulating these overwhelming thoughts and emotions, and help them to draw from their own strength to live a life that’s purposeful and fulfilling according to their values. You are the expert on you, and I will be there to give insight, feedback, and offer new perspectives and coping skills.

Our past may not define us, but we can sometimes carry our past with us in our bodies, and not realize it. If we do not properly process those past hurts, trials and traumas we continue to carry them with us through life. It is my hope as a therapist to help others to heal from those, and to let those past memories not be triggers of any negative or hurtful feelings, but to just be a memory. I am passionate about trauma therapy. I believe that there can be healing, and it is my desire to help others through that process.

Life can feel like a struggle sometimes. We may have had negative experiences, and may find ourselves stuck in certain patterns or ways of reacting. As a therapist my goals are to explore and validate my clients’ experiences, help them better understand where our patterns come from and help to empower my clients to find new ways to move forward.

I am passionate about working with individuals, partners, and families that have been impacted by substance use and alcoholism. These experiences have a way of breaking us down causing disconnection and hopelessness. I believe psychoeducation, connection, and support can build a pathway to recovery that is sustainable and provides a foundation for a life worth living. Research shows us that the more support and connection an individual or family has, the more likely they are to overcome challenges. My goal is to help guide, support, and teach you skills that will help you or your loved one live without alcohol or other drugs.

Welcome to my practice! You inspire me! It takes a great deal of courage to reach out and ask for help and I admire that! Sometimes our expected life path shifts and it can feel extremely overwhelming to find our footing and get back on track to living the life we deserve. My blended therapeutic approach of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness can help you do just that. I strongly believe that in order to make meaningful changes in our lives, we have to get to the core beliefs (both about the self and about the world we live in) that are driving our behaviors.

I began my career working in inpatient substance abuse facilities attached to hospitals. I am well-versed in groups for addiction and prefer individual counseling for issues in later recovery or dual diagnosis. I see adults and motivated adolescents in my practice. Both men and women are welcome as are couples and families. Other specialty areas are sexual abuse and mood disorders.

Therapy is a passion that I feel so lucky to have found. I learn with and from every client I see. While I have experience with many populations, I am most knowledgeable with assisting victims of domestic violence, individuals struggling with depression/anxiety, and those who have experience with addiction. I enjoy working with individuals who are ready to face their fears, build a therapeutic relationship, and improve their overall quality of life. I believe that regardless of what you have achieved, you deserve the life you are willing to create for yourself. I currently see ages 13 and up.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Knoxville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
