It wasn't supposed to be like this. You worked hard, you kept your eyes on the prize, you sacrificed, you never complained or made excuses. You had the work ethic, the grit, and the intelligence to overcome every challenge you faced. But for some reason that isn't working any more. You tell yourself to buckle down and power through, but you just...don't. You watch yourself drinking more, gaining weight, missing deadlines, lashing out at the people closest to you. It's all falling apart. You've outworked so many competitors and overcome so much, but now you're in a battle with yourself, and for the first time, you're losing.

First of all, I want to acknowledge the effort, strength or courage it took for you to take these steps in searching for a therapist. Starting your healing journey can feel like an overwhelming task. My goal is to come alongside you in that process to make it less so. I work with people who experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, who may be feeling less connected to themselves, or are struggling in relationships. I enjoy working with my clients to help them learn to manage difficult emotions, process past trauma, and live in closer alignment with their values.

Unfortunately, problems come more easily and swiftly than progress and solutions. Weeks and months of positive steps forward can seem to be undone in a fraction of the time. I hope to unravel your life's complexities together to find and build a resilient path forward. Depression, anxiety, addiction and trauma can seem insurmountable, but they aren't. I'd love to explore the story of who you are and help blend it into the story of who you want to be!

Depressed, anxious, isolated, and neuro diverse individuals often struggle to find themselves and need a therapist to help guide them. As people, we have a wide range of emotions waiting to be recognized, accepted, investigated, and nurtured. This is even more true for people going through adolescence in this modern era.

I have been honored to work in the mental health field for 7 years. During my tenure I have worked with individuals suffering from Grief, Bereavement, Depression, Bi-polar disorder, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, you name it, I have most likely seen it. Although working through these illnesses with individuals has been rewarding, the greatest moments have been celebrating the small victories clients make during the process of recovery. I have had the pleasure of witnessing the growth and seeing change through providing person-centered therapy.

Hi there, finding the best-fit therapist is sometimes the hardest part of getting started in therapy, but that’s why you’re here: to find a therapist you will feel supported by in your healing journey. And I may have the expertise you are looking for. Scroll down, take a look around, and get comfy; here’s a bit about me: I work with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults, and while I have a lot of clients who are in different life phases, one thing tends to ring true for each of them: they want to feel less weighted by the voice that spins in their head, break past their fears, and start living a life they love.

You're busy and anxious. The relationships in your life feel tense. Your child's behavior is concerning you, and your relationship with your partner feels nonexistent. You are so busy balancing everything you don't feel like yourself anymore. You feel like you've tried everything to get the spark back, but the harder you try the more tension builds between your child, partner, and self. You're not sure if you can fulfill all your roles anymore. It feels hard.

Have you been feeling exhausted and weighed down with daily stressors and obligations? Have you noticed you are sad more often, isolating, or not having interest in things you once loved. So many people have been gravitating towards therapy but you might wonder if it will work for you. I would love to help you explore those feelings and hopefully get you to a better place, a more satisfying place.

I specialize in working with young adults and adults who have experienced trauma and/or struggle with mood, anxiety, substance use, or personality disorders that hinder their functioning and/or relationships. Together, we will work to understand what is keeping you stuck or preventing you from making progress and we will identify areas in which you would like to see change. While my approach is primarily psychodynamic, I incorporate attachment theory, DBT/CBT skills, mentalizing, and family systems theory depending on my clients’ needs and presenting problems.

Who am I? What is my purpose? What does the science say? Where is the evidence? These are some of my favorite questions I hear as a counselor. My name is Ron Saenz and I'm an LPC passionate about exploring the mind-body connection through DBT, mindfulness meditation, flow, yoga and martial arts. I use my love for psychology and behavioral science to teach clients about how the brain works, while helping them integrate research-proven wellness practices into their everyday lives. I believe that therapy should be both fun and fulfilling, and have made it my mission to share this passion with every client I meet.

I provide a warm atmosphere where you can talk about what’s on your mind; feel heard, accepted, and if you're ready, empowered to begin the next steps toward the changes you desire. We will discuss your goals during the first visit and together come up with a plan of action to make them happen. Many clients by this stage have been struggling for a long time. They can’t even imagine that they could be free of their troubling symptoms.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Houston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
