Dear SUPER Woman, Life is like strands of Christmas lights thrown in a box, a tangled mess that needs to be sorted. However, if you hold one end and I hold one end, we can sort them out much quicker. THAT is counseling! I believe that everyone gets to a place in life where friends and family are too close to help. Counseling is the place for you to explore your thoughts and feelings in a confidential, nonjudgmental, safe place. Together, you and I will build a healthy therapeutic relationship, where I will help you discover more about yourself and your patterns of behavior.

Youth and adults who come to me often struggle with social-emotional and behavioral issues affecting academic progress, job functioning, peer/family relationships and self-image. These issues are often rooted in family conflict, identity confusion and trauma and can lead to more serious issues of anxiety and depression. As an interventionist, I will first help you resolve interpersonal conflicts and move outward to address family relational, social, academic, cultural and spiritual functioning.

Life can often be difficult and hard to navigate, but I believe in the strength and resiliency to grow and change. Therapy is a challenging, yet warm process that entails self-reflection and honest conversations. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to learn new skills in a comfortable and safe environment.

With over 20 years as a therapist, one common theme has been evident: people want to know they are safe to disclose. Safe to know that they will not be judged as less than others or shamed for whatever they are experiencing or may have experienced. For this reason, one of my foremost goals has been to create a safe space. A space that will allow individuals to begin a journey that will enable them to identify, explore and become equipped with the tools that will allow them to experience the life they deserve.

Are you becoming who you want to be? Are you overwhelmed by anxiety, negative thoughts, or self-doubt? Do you feel your emotions are controlling you? Are you struggling with the unknowns surrounding becoming financially independent, beginning, or ending a relationship, starting a career or making other major life decisions? Are you ready to heal from unhealthy relationships? You may remember a time when negative thoughts, strained relationships, and feeling overwhelmed weren’t the “norm”…but those days seems like a distant memory. Don’t you wish you had the tools to change that?

Seeking counseling is a very personal decision. Finding the right provider can be the most important step in the healing process. I believe I have helped so many clients because I use an array of tools and methods which I tailor to a client's unique goals. My approach is to work hard to understand a client's perspective and values. Sometimes this means helping the client explore and discover what that is for themselves. I lead AND follow - I may prompt, encourage, and confront, but I follow a client's pace (willingness and readiness) to delve into the issues.

Trauma comes in many ways and brings with it many difficult symptoms. Fear, worry, sadness, and a feeling that you can't cope are just a few. Others don't always understand you or know how to help. This is especially true for parents who want to help their children navigate traumatic experiences but feel helpless to know where to start. There is nothing more frightening than having a child or teen who is struggling with anxiety, depression, and/or suicidal thoughts. Teenagers often feel unheard and parents can feel helpless.

From 1994-2017 I had a private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor . After retiring from that job, I began practicing as a Life Coach, which I do now via the internet as well as in person. My clients often feel stuck & need encouragement to identify the issues keeping them from moving forward. We then work together to formulate an Action plan. My job is to keep my client focused on following & completing that plan while enjoying the progress. I offer hope and support while clients work through troubling issues.

Are you feeling trapped, hopeless, like things are not going to get better? Whatever challenge you are facing, you do not have to go through it alone. Too often people shy away from counseling, but you would be amazed by the positive impact it can have on your life. I am here to support and encourage you, not to tell you what to do. No one is exempt from problems, but how an individual respond's to that problem is key to resolving the issue and helps decrease symptoms such as anxiety and depression which may come with an unwelcome situation. I am licensed to provide services in Alabama, Michigan, and Kentucky.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Houston?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
