As an Acute/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner, I was not cognizant of the impact of mental illness on family and society, until I decided to pursue a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Degree. I believe that societal stigmatization of mental illness, and the shame felt by families who have a loved one with mental illness, makes it difficult for these patients to recover, and live peacefully for the rest of their lives.
