Generally, it is discomfort that brings us into therapy. Discomfort (anxiety, depression, stress) is borne of an almost limitless array of life circumstances: challenging relationships, problematic perceptions of self, coping with life/work stressors, and the uncertainties we are all facing in today’s world. This universal condition of discomfort, as one famous therapist said; finds us “in the soup together.” As a consequence of our shared humanity, it is in relationship that we humans most commonly find the opportunity for deepened self-understanding and abiding change.
To that end, a therapeutic relationship in particular is organized to provide a path and processes that ultimately lead to greater self-knowledge, understanding of the sources of one’s distress, and emotional and interpersonal competencies in dealing with it. My aim as a psychologist is to provide the space in which we can engage in this way.
In over 30 years of clinical practice, I have learned to apply a range of therapeutic models, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing), Emotion Focused Therapy, and self-regulatory skill training, choosing the model to best suit the individual and what he/she hopes to achieve.
