People come to therapy with complicated feelings. For some, it's a welcome opportunity to share thoughts and feelings that might not feel okay to share elsewhere. Others might view therapy as a humiliating defeat, a sign that they have failed to "solve the problem" alone. I have worked with people at both ends of this spectrum and those in between. In spite of the range of attitudes that mark one's entrance into therapy, my experience tells me that those who give therapy a genuine chance to help them will be helped. This is true even for the most reluctant of beginners.
I am happy to work with people of any gender presentation. I particularly enjoy being able to help with major transitions, both expected (such as career change) and unexpected (illness or loss). While I tend to offer long-term work, I am happy to provide time-limited behavioral treatments for PTSD and insomnia.
Giving therapy a chance to help will depend a lot on how you feel with a particular therapist. Safety, even as you discuss uncomfortable topics, is key. Therapy asks you to put your trust in another person. This may not happen immediately, but with the right therapist, you will usually sense the possibility.
