As a South Asian Muslim women, providing culturally competent therapy is extremely important to me.
Are you struggling with challenges that seem insurmountable? Are they causing you to feel overwhelmed, hopeless and isolated? I seek to help you feel empowered and work towards healing by providing you with the tools and skills to enhance and improve your life. I believe the therapeutic process is collaborative and should provide an environment for you to explore and identify patterns of behavior, gain clarity and seek resolution. It is important for me to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for you to be able to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Croy is a member of the Muslim Association of Psychological Services (MAPS) and the founder of the New Jersey chapter.
So often, it can be difficult to open up to a stranger. For many of us, placing our struggles in the hands of others can be an emotionally and sometimes physically demanding task. A safe space is needed, one without judgment or bias; a place to feel cared for, listened to, and supported. This is the space Croy strives to create.

I love working with teens, young adults, and couples. My clients work with me on things like transitioning out of adolescence, exploring identity, handling academic and social issues, reducing anxiety, social phobia, depression, and managing ADHD, PTSD, and relationship issues. I also enjoy creating a safe space for clients coming from a Muslim background. With couples, I draw on Gottman Method techniques to increase emotional connection and communication. See if I'm accepting new clients and book online at www.resolutioncc.com/team.

If you find yourself with challenges that you desire to navigate successfully through, then you are in the right place! I believe, "without a struggle there can be no progress" as stated by the late Fredrick Douglass. My ideal client is someone who is looking to gain better inward insight and improve the skills he/she already has while discovering new ones.

You're slamming the alarm clock; it was another night of broken sleep. Feeling drained and wishing for a moment of peace and happiness. You are giving to others when you're running low and rarely have time for yourself. Pressures and stress are piling up and weighing on your shoulders. You want to reach out for help but are scared of being vulnerable. At night when you lay down to sleep, the thoughts are racing and the worries return. All that you want is understanding, support, and acceptance.

I had my first position as a counselor when I was just 20 and the compassion that lived through me then continues 48 years later. While developing professionally I enrolled in a personal individual and group training analysis and had a deep and caring experience as a patient. I consider it an incredible responsibility to practice as an integrative healer as I believe the therapeutic relationship is a privilege between two people. I continue to cultivate my personal practice, evolving throughout my life with an open heart, and open mind. My mother, and father remain central influences in my practice as a psychologist/psychoanalyst.

I know you're more than your story, your pain, joy, social identity & experiences. As a South Asian immigrant, I proactively advocate for my clients both inside and outside the therapy room. I will show up for you if you need help involving other family or partner participants in therapy sessions. I connect a session with the next session with a journaling prompt or a big feeling exploration during the week. I also make sure I do not abruptly end sessions and take the last few minutes to do some grounding and mindfulness exercises helping clients feel less overwhelmed when they leave the therapy room.

It can be difficult to open up about your personal struggles to a stranger. Many racial/ethnically diverse clients find it to be a distinct challenge: “we can’t find a therapist who understands our cultural/religious beliefs & it is too emotionally exhausting to explain it.” In this journey of self-exploration and coping with life’s struggles, the last thing you need is a counselor that you need to educate, feel fearful to talk to about culturally sensitive issues due to judgment or stereotypes, or to feel retaliation from someone who is supposed to provide you a safe space. Natasha aims to create this space for everyone she sees.

Muslim Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognize an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
