Life is difficult and unpredictable. It is often filled with pain and suffering which can leave us feeling alone and misunderstood. Perhaps, this describes you. In your life, maybe recently or long ago, you’ve experienced loss, trauma, unfulfilling relationships, disappointment in yourself or others, accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt, or inadequacy. And perhaps, you’ve tried to talk to someone about your struggles, but you felt it was too much for that person to hear or for you to share at that time. Then again, maybe you’ve never spoken to anyone about the burden you carry which has inflated your feelings of loneliness.

You have an unmet need to feel heard in the midst of the noise, distractions, loss, never ending pressure, and stress that surrounds you. You want to break free so that you can enjoy a focused, balanced, and functional life, but don't know how. The anxiety, grief, depression, worry, insomnia, trauma, and chaos associated with coping and fitting in can be so overwhelming that you need some hope, directions, and solutions. Simply put, you need a blueprint for your own revolution so that you can continue moving forward, instead of running around in circles.

I believe that behind every problem lies the powerful desire for something better. In addition to working with couples and families, my expertise is in therapy with adolescents (13+) and adults, both gay and straight. I use research-based therapies that offer practical methods and skills that build emotional flexibility, self-awareness and resilience. Many of my clients are working to become free of self-defeating patterns resulting from emotional neglect in early or adolescent development. My typical client is intelligent and responsible as well as anxious and stressed, lonely, depressed or angry.

Feeling overwhelmed, stuck repeating the same self defeating thoughts and behaviors? Maybe you feel like you are on auto-pilot, just existing trying to get through the day. You know you are not feeling or being your best self but aren’t sure how to take the next step. You’ve tried so many times before and you’re exhausted. Are you impacted by trauma and feel like you can’t move forward, express your needs or act in alignment with your values? You have things to say but don’t feel empowered to speak your truth and set boundaries that support your well being and personal goals. Have you been impacted by religious trauma?

Living with a chronic health condition or pain can be overwhelming, scary, and confusing. At times you don't recognize yourself anymore, and you wonder what new limitations the day might bring. You know these struggles are somehow behind your depressed and anxious feelings, and you feel alone...that no one understands. Right now, you have more questions than answers, but you know you'd do anything to get your life back. The roller coaster of doctor visits, medication changes, and emotions is becoming too much and you're ready to get off the roller coaster and feel grounded again.

These approaches are also used to treat addiction, anxiety, depression, grief, and chronic illnesses and pain.
At its roots, the word “psychotherapy” translates to “healing of the soul”. As an EMDR certified trauma therapist, I embody this to treat PTSD, CPTSD and am privileged to walk alongside others on their healing journies. I work with children, adolescents, and adults. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of South Carolina and in Arizona, and I am a Board-Certified Registered Art Therapist. I have passion and commitment to supporting people in building capacity for resilience and growth. I have trained extensively in Somatic and Attachment-Focused EMDR (certified from EMDRIA), and in Ericksonian Clinical Hypnosis.

I have found incorporating hypnosis and visualization very useful in a variety of problems including weight loss, quitting smoking and anxiety related issues.
My practice orientation with clients integrates the power of our mind-body-spirit connection toward healing wounded areas within ourselves. I specifically help individuals that have been victims of narcissistic abuse in their early childhood relationships or current adult relationships heal this very real trauma to their minds and bodies. Focus is toward strengthening adaptive, rational and positive thoughts and behaviors instead of living from fear and trauma. Narcissism undermines growth, strength, health and productive ways of living. Meditation, creative visualization/affirmation skills, breathing exercises, role-playing, voice-dialogue and gestalt methods are employed for moving stagnant energy in our bodies. .

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
