My name is Alex and I help people change unhelpful ways of thinking and bottling up their emotions. I support people through experiences of grief including: break ups, death, divorce, death of a pet, and loss of trust and community. I’m here for the people with broken hearts that fear they’ll never be whole again; the people who have felt pain so deeply that a life without it seems impossible to imagine; the people who stare at their ceiling at late hours of the night wondering how to make sense of everything.

Welcome. I approach therapy as a collaborative and respectful process to help individuals, couples, and families learn new, adaptive ways to relieve emotional distress from anxiety or depression, illness, loss, grief, and trauma, therefore, becoming much more empowered and successful in their lives. In couples therapy, partners learn to manage and repair conflict, improve sexual intimacy, recover from betrayal, and enhance trust and friendship. Family therapy creates healthy patterns, routines, and behaviors to improve and heal maladaptive family dynamics and learn respectful and loving ways to communicate more successfully.

I feel particularly called to working with grief and loss.
For most people, strong relationships are an important indicator of health and well-being. When we feel stuck in old patterns that no longer serve us, our connection to others suffers too, which can turn up as depression, anxiety, or simply feeling alone and disconnected. By reconnecting with our essential gifts and strengths through the therapy process, we in turn can offer more to family, friends, and community.

Hello! I'm currently accepting former clients and a small number of new clients as my practice is small. I work best with folx who are contending w/ depression, anxiety, and feelings of social or familial isolation. I'm comfortable with helping those who struggle with suicidal thoughts and self-harming. I've had successes in assisting families with increasing effective communication, individual self-harm reduction, and helping people to become more self-accepting. I am at ease with working with persons who have met grief of any kind, those who have experienced trauma, and anyone who just can't find their peace.

Are you looking to increase connection, joy, positive moods, and strengthen healthy relationship with yourself and others? I specialize in a Mindfulness and Somatic/body based modality called Internal Family Systems (IFS). IFS allows us to gently and safely reprocess old wounds, work on what is most important right now in your life, and help you return to your core natural state of connection, purpose and authenticity. It is deeper than traditional 'talk therapy', as it can get to the root of trauma and attachment wounding, often based in childhood difficulties that result in patterns of anxiety, depression, grief, and dissociation.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
