Life is too short to feel stuck and not live fully. My clients and I work collaboratively on relationship issues, anxiety, depression, grief, loss, job related stress, and trauma. I often work with men and women who either want to find love in their lives or who have recently experienced a loss of relationship through a painful break up. I have successfully helped clients getting "unstuck" and moving forward in their lives, work, and relationships. My approach is client-centered and relational. I relate to you based on your needs, your temperament, and your personal histories.

Anxiety, depression, grief, loss, and lack of self-compassion often contribute to feelings of hopelessness.
Sometimes life can seem overwhelming, and problems feel insurmountable. At these times, psychotherapy can be useful in helping you to find your way to a healthier, happier, and more meaningful life.

Life can be overwhelming on any given day, but when mental health concerns are added to the mix, it can seem impossible to overcome even small hiccups. This is normal, but it is not something that you should have to deal with alone. My goal as a therapist is to address whatever problems you are experiencing at any given moment. I provide structured sessions using evidence-based approaches to help you or your family tackle concerns related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, trauma, grief, relationship stressors, infertility and adoption issues, sport performance, and life adjustments.

I facilitate bereavement, caregiver and cancer support groups as well.
I have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. Early in my career I co-authored a book called Relationships, which explored how marriages either succeeded or failed. My work on the book helped me formulate a way of working with couples, one that was supportive of struggle in the interest of strengthening the relationship bond. I attempt to help couples not only survive but also to thrive. In addition, I do long- term psychodynamic work with individuals . I have worked with many people struggling with depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress.

I have experience with trauma, addictions and bereavement issues.
Felling unsatisfied in your relationships or career? Is your child or adolescent struggling with school or at home? Is anxiety getting in the way of identifying and realizing life goals and aspirations? Do you see yourself repeating various patterns and feel ill-equipped to change them? Learned patterns from the past can persist into adulthood and frustrate one's ability to realize age-appropriate goals with relationships, career issues, and impede academic success.

I am acutely sensitive to all ranges of feeling, and to the critical need for all those who have difficulty sustaining work and love to surrender to facing the pain of grief from past losses and disappointments.
I have found that the most efficient avenue to life progress can be the connection between the psychotherapist and the client. Such connection promotes an evolving internal connection with one's most true passions, and offers the company of another in facing fears. I would help you to deal with conflicts that block your motivation and passion and help you open to new ways of engaging with your inner resources, and with the significant people in your life. In order to this I address any blocks & resistances that interfere with deep and authentic feeling contact.

Grief counseling really works.
After a loved one dies, you’re faced with the challenge of adjusting to your "new normal", a life without this important person. All at once, you may feel sad, lonely, angry, helpless, shocked, scared, anxious and maybe even a little relieved (which throws a little guilt and shame into the mix). And, If you have children, they're suffering, too, which adds an entirely new dimension to your grief. ALL OF THIS IS NORMAL, even if your loss occurred years ago. Please visit jillgriefcounselor.com to learn how I can help you feel better.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
