Veterans, first responders, people in recovery, people who have experienced PTSD, grief, loss, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, sexual abuse/assault/trauma, pre-post divorce, chronic pain management, family discord, and palliative care for patient and/or family are some of the concerns I have clinical experience working with.
My goal as a therapist is to help you create stability, happiness, and lasting life changes through peace and empowerment. You are not defined by the circumstances you have traversed. We will safely explore and process your experiences, develop understanding, build internal and external supports, all to help you create a fulfilling life. My counseling style incorporates multiple approaches such as CBT, DBT, trauma-focused, and client centered therapies. I am an LCSW-R with over 20 years experience. I also offer supervision towards earning advanced licensing in New York State (LCSW ) and professional supervision.

Life transitions such as the ending of a relationship, or a job loss, can feel just as intense as the death of a loved one. The loss you feel is profound. You feel sad. You feel anxious. You question why it happened. You aren't sure how to grieve, or even if you should. Phrases like, what if, and should have, become repeating thoughts that keep you up at night. It is natural to grieve any change in your life, even if you made the decision. Grieving is important because it provides closure and enables you to move forward. Grief is the necessary path we walk in order to heal.

This has familiarized me with a variety of family crises, including loss.
Let's work it out together. Most of us struggle from time to time with relationship questions, parenting conundrums, career decisions or even the loss of someone or something of great significance to us. Over the years, I've come to respect the value of sharing these struggles with a sensitive professional. I am here to help you explore how better to manage the obstacles that stand in your way. Working with individuals, couples, families and groups, I enjoy helping people come to a better understanding of how to work through the challenges in their lives.

Are you feeling anxious, sad or do you feel less energy and satisfaction than you used to? Is something in your life not working like a relationship, your career, or a life goal - leaving you feeling frustrated and stuck? I specialize in helping people work through childhood trauma, along with current day issues - workplace stress, anxiety, infertility, divorce and grief. I tend to be an "in the trenches" therapist - highly empathic, listening and responding. I use EMDR therapy and Somatic Experiencing tools when that could be a useful approach to resolve areas in which you feel triggered or anxious.

I provide talk therapy and specialize in trauma, loss and grief, anxiety, depression, women issues, and adolescent development.
I have always been the person people come to talk to and my practice is a natural extension of myself. I strive to develop a trusting and comfortable clinical relationship with all my clients to help them process their history, various challenges, pains, uncertainties, and family dynamics. Thirty years of practice have taught me how incredibly resilient the most struggling individual can be given the genuine support of others and even without it. I am a licensed psychotherapist specializing in grief, loss, depression, and anxiety. I often meet with people who are new to (or a little skeptical of) therapy, but are still feeling out of shift with their peers or feeling abnormal in some way. Maybe you have lost the sense of joy that you used to have. Or maybe you've been having trouble getting through your everyday activities. You may experience social anxiety and have been feeling a lack of confidence lately. You'd like to be more supportive in your relationships. If you're feeling a heaviness that prevents you from enjoying your life, I'm here to help you.

A typical session with me includes talking, cursing, crying, laughing, questioning, and a whole lot of compassion.

I treat many people who are dealing with grief and loss.
First - I love my work. Everything else flows from that. I have been a psychotherapist for more than thirty years and have studied a variety of theoretical and practical techniques to help people in emotional pain. I have a Masters Degree in Social Work and a Certificate in Psychoanalysis. The most important thing for a therapist is to begin with the patients' concerns and feelings. As the great Rabbi Hillel said: "the rest is commentary."

When you look for a therapist, you want someone you trust. Trust is the most important aspect of a good client/therapist match. It's a good idea to come in for a few sessions and get a feeling for the therapist, and I welcome you to do so. After you feel comfortable, you can start identifying the blocks that prevent you from living the best life you can live. I've helped people with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, histories of abuse, grief and loss, and people who've been hospitalized to break through their feelings of shame.

Sometimes grief can feel overwhelming. We come to understand that we need help to work through our loss, but it can be difficult to know where to start. As a clinical social worker with five years of bereavement experience, I believe that you can heal. I've worked with many individuals who are new or skeptical of therapy and it has been my great joy to help them gain confidence and hope through our work together. If you experienced a traumatic or overwhelming loss, I would love to provide a safe, affirming space to work through it.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
