At Open Fields Therapy, we understand and support adults who experience anxiety, depressed mood, and relationship difficulties. We all develop patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to others. Often these patterns have served us in the past. However, during times of stress, loss, or traumatic experience, these patterns may be unhelpful, and we can feel stuck. This is when therapy can make a big difference in feeling better and help us live more effectively. At Open Fields Therapy we seek to understand your unique situation and help to remove the obstacles that interfere with living out the values that are important to you.

Immediate evenings and weekend availability! Most of us are looking for peace, wellness, and a connection to others and and at times in our lives those things can feel so far away. Whether it be a recent loss, move, health diagnosis or child’s behavior, these changes can make us feel overwhelmed and disconnected. Through our time together I am confident you will be able to identify ways to navigate these changes and feel better. The therapeutic relationship is important and I intend to co-create a space that is comfortable and judgment free so that growth can happen. We might paint together or drink tea while we meet.

I help individuals dealing with grief and loss, those going through infertility, college students with adjustment issues, adults with anxiety, and depression. I am passionate about “helping the helpers” as I know they are often some of the ones who are in need of the most support but are almost always the last people to seek it out. I have personal experience and a passion for navigating different life stages, the journey into motherhood, including the different hardships and pathways that can lead someone to and through being a parent.

Experiencing sadness, or feelings of emptiness or hopelessness? Having increased irritability or frustrations over small matters? Troubles with sleep (insomnia or sleeping too much), or experiencing a loss of interest in things that once brought you joy? These are all symptoms of depression or anxiety. Life has become more busy, and we feel pulled in so many directions. We wear different hats: spouse, parent, employee, loved one, and they all bring different pressures with them. Finding comfort and peace is important to being a better self!

My clients include people coping with: self-worth, anxiety, depression, grief and loss.
Many people are finding life more difficult these days. There is often so much to deal with in our personal lives, add the impact of world events and it can all just be too much. Having someone to listen and support you can make a big difference in coping with your struggles and not feeling alone. I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t like being listened to and understood. My focus in therapy is to help you get relief from your pain and explore ways to cope with life’s ongoing challenges.

Struggles that my clients often face include chronic illness, grief and loss, stress, life transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse, and issues with self-esteem.
I believe that life throws "curve balls" that can be challenging to navigate. Therapy is a place to explore how these challenges impact us, those we care about, and how we can move forward with what we value in our lives. I believe that each of us is the expert of our lives and we are empowered to make healthy decisions for ourselves. I would like to help you through the more difficult times in your journey, creating a safe place for you to be open, explore, and grow as an individual or couple.

Do you fear no one will understand you? In situations longer than you should be? Struggling with the complexities of grief or major life transitions? I help adolescents, teens, and adults heal their self-worth wounds before their potential harmful coping skills manifest into lifelong struggles, and help folks rewrite their story once they understand that the only person that needs to understand them is themselves.

In our society, we are taught that there are expectations on how to grieve and given a predetermined timeline for grief to run its course. One thing I have learned throughout my work is that there is not one definition of grief and everyone has their own experience. How we choose to process our grief can impact the direction of our lives. I believe that by providing a safe, supportive environment I can help you navigate your grieving process in a way that feels healing for you.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
