My specialization is grief and loss up to and including complicated grief.
My main focus is on the importance of emotional wellbeing. I believe that everyone experiences difficulties in their lives and see the counseling office as a space for clients to express and normalize difficult feelings in a safe environment. I believe that people have all of the components for a happy and healthy life but sometimes need help processing and navigating through their feelings and experiences to learn new and more effective ways to cope. I operate through the Polyvagal Theory lens to assess emotional regulation and work to stabilize and co-regulate clients as this is essential to healing.

I have a background with recovery, LGBTQ+ identity development, and grief & loss.
You’ve made a courageous step in seeking therapy. Therapy can help us heal and grow, through deep listening and presence. Early life shapes how we create our sense of self, learn boundaries, and tend to feelings. We can decide now how we want to show up for ourselves and others, uncovering skills and beliefs that no longer serve us.

Life can be really difficult. You’ve tried so much on your own to overcome the anxiety, grief and depression. The past comes up to haunt you just when you’ve thought you have come to terms with it. Day to day functioning can be difficult and daunting. Getting to sleep at night can be a challenge yet getting out of bed in the morning to face another day is difficult. Relationships are not going as you would like them to. Friends do not understand the pain and the daily struggles. You may be struggling with health and family issues as well.

I work with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, perinatal mood/anxiety issues, parent/child attachment issues, substance abuse, adolescent and midlife transitions, I provide a safe space to do the work together.
Most often the goal coming into therapy is to find relief and decrease symptoms. Some may come to gain skills to get through challenging life situations and transitions. The skills learned in therapy can be applied for you to use throughout your life and will support long term positive change. The change occurs as we become aware of our life story and the patterns that unfold. In this process we gain more awareness and understanding of the self in relation to others. It is my passion to walk alongside you on the path of self-discovery as your story unfolds and you gain personal meaning.

I believe the purpose of counseling children is to help them empower themselves to make their own choices and have their voices be heard. I have a degree in Licensed Professional Counseling from Central Michigan University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology and child development. After graduation, I found my passion helping children and parents navigate challenges in grief and trauma. I have found that allowing children to be who they are during sessions, allows them to feel safe and secure to express their true emotions.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
