Life is difficult. Grief, loss, trauma and all of the existential concerns of relationships with others, the relationship with yourself and the meaning and purpose for your life and occupations, are all very real emotional problems. Effective therapy addresses these concerns in a way that nothing else can.

“The only constant in life is change.” Are you adjusting to a: new job, relationship, loss of a loved one, or overall change in your way of life? Do you feel overwhelmed by the many changes causing you to feel stagnant? You notice others seemingly accepting change fluidly throughout their lives and are somewhat in awe of the process. You are tired of replaying the same scenario in your head, while your sadness and anxiety escalate.

Choosing to see a therapist is not always an easy decision. It is often hard to imagine sharing difficult, painful or shameful feelings with a stranger. Choosing to see a therapist is also a brave decision, filled with possibility. As an experienced clinical psychologist, licensed in Michigan and Indiana, I believe that therapy is most effective when it is a collaborative effort, in which client and therapist work together to know and understand the strengths and challenges that confront the client every day. Therapy is the work of knowing oneself and then setting out to manage these discoveries effectively.

Welcome! I am currently accepting new clients for individual or couple, goal-oriented psychotherapy. I believe that beneath your suffering is an internal system that needs nurturing, updating, and unification, to improve connection to yourself and others. Regardless of the mental health diagnosis (or even in the absence of one), my overall approach is similar: using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and/or Internal Family Systems (IFS), we will work toward understanding the heart of both internal and external messages, freeing you to live a value-based and balanced life.

Welcome! I specialize in working with adult children of (and/or partners to) narcissists and the emotionally immature/abusive/unavailable. My clients say they’re relieved to have found a therapist who "gets" them. I am ready to "get" and care for you, too. Are you experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-worth, self-doubt/blame, shame, guilt, a sense of obligation? Are you an expert "people pleaser" because you had to be? Did you receive attention, love, acceptance based on certain conditions? Did you experience controlling behavior and/or inconsistency/instability that felt unsafe? Is it hard to advocate for yourself? I get it.

The more you understand yourself and your patterns of behavior the better you can make positive change. Do you have marital issues that you are struggling with and need an honest objective opinion? Are you struggling with depression or anxiety and can’t seem to get out of the cycle? Many times it is another set of ears that is needed to help bring objectivity and clarity to an issue of life's crossroads. I also enjoy helping people understand why they keep repeating negative patterns and behaviors. Therapy can be very positive and inspire you to make changes.

You hope to work on freeing yourself from pain stemming from trauma or difficult life circumstances that manifest in your day to day as: stress, anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem issues, negative body image, emotional eating, relationship struggles, career concerns, or life transitions.
You want to find peace, but the critical noise of “it’s just not good enough” controls and weighs you down. There’s a part of you that’s a high achiever with perfectionistic tendencies that feels exhausted and overwhelmed, riddled with self-doubt. The days go by in a flash as you strive to please and meet others: expectations, wants, and needs, while you’ve lost sight of your own. The present moment feels out of reach as you constantly think into the future or ruminate over the past.

Children/youth/families counseling, couples, addiction/substance abuse, behavioral problems, adoption, brown children/youth/adults, grief, anxiety, depression, life stages/obstacles, stress, body image issues, eating disorders and advocacy.
Hello! Within my first few years of college, I finally figured out what I wanted to do as a career. I realized I wanted to help people through their own life obstacles, trauma, life stages, and more! I want to help others with their mental health and make their world a better place. As I continue to learn and grow throughout my professional career, I want to work with a variety of populations and ages. To me, counseling is a journey of being honest with who you are and who you want to present to the world. I believe that it is an honor to be able to embark on this journey with you and to share unique experiences of ourselves.

I work successfully with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship and family struggles, self-esteem issues and grief and loss.
Are you a stressed-out UM student or are you dealing with a major life overhaul? Maybe brand new at the job, uprooted by a move across country or bombarded by the pressures of campus life? An exhausted new parent, navigating tricky relationships with adult kids or reinventing yourself after retirement? Our lives are full of change and change is tough but a tremendous chance for reflection and growth. Learning to manage these changes intentionally and effectively will pave the way for what comes next.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
