I offer two broad categories of services. First, I provide onsite grief or critical incident support in the workplace. Employers or EAPs request that I come to the workplace to provide immediate emotional first aid after there has been a crisis or disruption affecting employees. The types of workplace events I often respond to include: Death of a Coworker, Layoffs, Injury, Violence, Robbery, Mass Shootings, and Natural Disasters. I am generally available for onsite employee services within 24-48 hours, and I am able to travel quite a distance to your location.

Do you struggle with aspects of your life, you wish could be different? Perhaps it's the way you feel or a certain behavior you find problematic. Maybe your concern involves your relationships with others or thoughts about yourself. I can help you change that. I believe that much of life is about balance. When our lives become out of balance we often feel hurt, stressed, angry, overwhelmed, or misunderstood. I have a strong interest in helping you achieve (or restore) the balance and peace you seek in your life, and I know that together we can achieve that goal.

My specialization is grief and loss up to and including complicated grief.
My main focus is on the importance of emotional wellbeing. I believe that everyone experiences difficulties in their lives and see the counseling office as a space for clients to express and normalize difficult feelings in a safe environment. I believe that people have all of the components for a happy and healthy life but sometimes need help processing and navigating through their feelings and experiences to learn new and more effective ways to cope. I operate through the Polyvagal Theory lens to assess emotional regulation and work to stabilize and co-regulate clients as this is essential to healing.

With over 25 years of counseling experience, I work with a broad spectrum of clients and client issues: individual and family therapy, couples counseling, women's issues, grief and loss, work & career issues; stress, depression, anxiety, social skills training, ADHD, anger management, adolescent/parent conflicts, alcohol recovery issues as well as parenting guidance and education.
To Schedule: https://headway.co/providers/monica-king In the midst of the busyness and conflicts of life it can be hard to hear your own wisdom saying who you are and how you can change. Psychotherapy can help. At its heart, psychotherapy is about listening. And you, feeling truly heard in a new, and refreshing way. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and interest to help my clients hear their own voice. Reflected, this offers possibilities for greater self understanding, change, and new direction. The therapeutic relationship serves as a catalyst for the positive changes that you as a client seek.

Are you having difficulty managing your anxiety or moving forward in your grief? You feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. The Negative Committee inside your head won't shut up & sit down. You want to break free from self-doubt, overthinking, people-pleasing. You are harder on yourself than on others. You worry when you don't have anything to worry about. You've experienced a loss & wonder how life will ever feel normal again. You're struggling to make sense of this loss. You don't know what the "new normal" is & want the old one back. You feel paralyzed, depressed, relieved, guilty in your grief all at the same time.

I have particular experience working with eating disorders, anxiety/depression, suicidal ideation, and grief.
The most important aspect of any therapy experience is a good therapeutic relationship, and I strive to develop a partnership with everyone I see in therapy. I believe that every client is the expert on themselves, and work with them to explore, understand, and address the issues or concerns bringing them to therapy at this time. Additionally, I recognize that therapy is political, so I work to understand the roles privilege and oppression play in the lives and mental health of those I work with.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
