I work with a variety of issues including low self-esteem, grief, complex trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and other issues, including relationship issues for couples and individuals.
Your past experiences do not define you! We can learn and grow through every experience--no matter how challenging or painful it might be. In the therapy room, I create a loving, safe space to truly explore your deepest inner workings, dreams, past hurts, desires, difficult feelings, and hopes for the future. I work with individuals, couples, and groups to help you become your best self and heal from experiences you may be struggling to overcome. Together we will build your capacity to be in relationship to yourself and others--to play, to grieve, to love, and to feel all your feelings.

I shelter – focusing less on individual and more on collective healing – from Primary Trauma (including Historical, Intergenerational, Racial, Spiritual/Religious), Secondary Trauma, Burnout, (the combination therein) Compassion Fatigue, and/or their cousins: Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Loss, Grief, Transition, Illness, Aging, and Dying.
I love listening. It’s been deepened by many decades and degrees. But, before that, I was a trauma survivor. So I listen to you and your clients the way I wanted someone to listen to me. Both. And. Beyond the decades and degrees, which define my listening in different ways, I shelter people; under the beautiful, broad umbrella of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). I listen - as a container - to create space for clients to see and find meaning; however they define that. I listen with a biopsychosocialspiritual approach. I listen to private clients, organizational clients, and clients experiencing (& transitioning out of) homelessness.

I also provide guidance for those coping with grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and the understanding and reprocessing of traumas.
We could all benefit from an outside perspective during life's stressors. I am here to listen, support, and empower you on your journey to clarity and making meaning from your experiences. Seeking support is a courageous step, not a sign of weakness.  Especially during the chaos, it can certainly be painful to feel lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of where to turn whether personally, professionally, or both.  My approach co-creates a judgment-free space where you can explore your challenges, uncover your inner strengths, and gently cultivate hope and resilience.

Prior to becoming a therapist, I did volunteer work in Appalachia, provided leadership in nonprofit organizations, and then for many years provided supportive care as a hospice chaplain and grief counselor.
What matters most in our relationships to ourselves and others often lies beneath the surface. I am the most interested in considering what is held deeply within the mind, sometimes beyond awareness, maybe vaguely, at its corners, or perhaps in repeating dynamics and patterns. I love being a psychotherapist not because it’s easy, but because it’s a practice that opens my mind and heart and sense of being. I’m a thoughtful, imaginative, creative person who’s interested in the dynamics of our interior lives. People I have had the privilege to come to know intimately help me understand their experience of being human - and my own.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
