Trauma and grief can be some of the most complicated life experiences an individual could go through. Since grief and trauma can take on many forms, they can be challenging to process no matter when they occur. These experiences can lead to a long list of feelings such as pain, frustration, vulnerability, shame, and loneliness. While grieving does not get easier with time, time allows for the adjustment of your new normal. Within my clinical foundation, I gravitate towards incorporating mindfulness and strength-based practices within treatment.

Everyone’s reason for seeking the support of a professional therapist is unique, and the decision to do so isn’t always easy. Whatever reason brought you here, and wherever you are in your journey, I hope that you feel proud of yourself for taking this step. The idea of talking to a stranger about your most private thoughts and feelings may seem overwhelming, but please know that I would be honored to get to know you and support you in your journey towards healing and growth. I have worked with individuals and couples facing a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, grief/loss, life transitions, and past or present trauma.

My specialties include relationship difficulties, coping with change/transitions, marriage/couples counseling, grief/mourning, and posttraumatic stress.
In my work, I focus on equipping children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families with the insight, knowledge, tools, and skills to live healthy and balanced lives. I aim to empower clients to advocate for themselves within the contexts in which they live. I strive to provide therapy that is culturally and contextually informed and that integrates psychological research and theory to provide the best and most appropriate care.

I have had the privilege of working with early to mid-adults of various backgrounds and identities. I am passionate about supporting my clients facing loss, identity development, anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions. Sometimes life catapults us into a new chapter, a new milestone, a new relationship status - filled with both challenge and promise - that we may not have asked for or are finding ourselves struggling with. Together in therapy, I collaborate with my clients to find meaning, awareness, and growth through experiencing the present and deliberately reflecting on patterns of the past.

Perhaps you are struggling with loss, or relationship issues.
Seeking therapy takes courage. Many life events have led you to consider such a step, and I am already on your side. I actually see my clients as healthier for choosing therapy than others who may have chosen to avoid it. The most important single factor in the client-therapist connection is the right fit. I have 25+ years of private practice experience working with people to overcome obstacles to feeling good about themselves and their relationships. My style is empathic, warm and direct.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
