Taking a closer look at a difficult experience takes strength and I appreciate your reaching out for guidance and support. Whether to manage a recent event, like a significant loss or transition, or to process an early issue that continues to impact your sense of worth, my role is to come to understand your experience and to externalize the issue so we can approach it in a way that is manageable. We will examine to what degree practiced coping strategies support current needs and we will call on strengths and supports that serve you. I will offer you information and strategies useful in developing a sense of wellbeing.

Some focal points of my work include end of life and grief support with individuals, couples and families; addiction and recovery from addiction; support through life transitions; trauma recovery; and cognitive tracking.
Maybe you are stuck in patterns that do not serve you. Maybe experiences and relationships that should give you pleasure leave you wanting. Or find yourself ruminating about the past or worrying about the future rather than living expansively, now. While many people can identify "the problem": alcohol and drugs; the death of a loved one; the end of a marriage, etc. Sometimes our inability to live fully confuses us. Together we can look at what is getting in the way. As a guide and companion I can help you heal past wounds and open to the joy and possibilities your life has to offer.

Beginnings… Endings…. And the breaths in between… I support women through life transitions. Pregnancy and new parenthood, an experience of loss, or a profound life event. People who find me often have experienced trauma, loss or are navigating a challenging life transition. I help with integrating these experiences and moving forward. Our work together is based on a mindful and gentle approach, as we work with your mind and body. My approach is trauma informed, with a focus on nervous system regulation. The state of our nervous system directly impacts the way we think, feel and experience our life.

I work especially well with traumatic experiences, troubled upbringing, grief and anxiety. If you want to understand or change the way you relate to yourself, your story and the world and maybe are longing for a more authentic self expression and acceptance or sense of iner strength, we might be a good fit. In my office I provide a compassionate and caring listening environment. We work together so that healing and growth can take place at your own rate, and from your own starting place, the place in which you feel safe and comfortable. I treat each client as a person, not as a diagnosis. I have been in practice for 20 years and have worked with men and women who have experienced many difficult issues, including partner abuse, grief and loss and life transitions. The difficult job of facing change is central to healing. I feel that one of the most important factors in growing is to grieve the past to live fully in the present.

Together we will explore the many facets of your ever-evolving self, as well your relationships to the people and environments around you. I particularly enjoy working with teens and young adults who are navigating questions around identity, struggling to find a sense of belonging, or who are hoping to feel more at ease in their body and with their sense of self.

Welcome! I've been in practice since 1990, specializing in helping people who've been victims of trauma (sexual, emotional or physical abuse, assault, harassment, as well as traumatic injuries, illnesses, accidents, disasters or climate distress), in child or adulthood. I also work with people having difficulties with major life transitions, such as moving away to college or a new city; divorce or bereavement; emotional challenges in changing careers or finishing training programs; or eating/body image. Helping people break destructive or unhappy relationship patterns is another area of my work.

We can all use some support at some point in our lives. Whether we are going through a life transition, experiencing the loss of something meaningful to us, or simply feeling stagnant in life, just to name a few. Sometimes, the hardest part is recognizing we need support or realizing that it is okay not to do it alone. If you are reading this, you are likely contemplating getting that support or may be ready to start that journey! Either way, it is the first step. That is great! My goal as a therapist is to assist the person, I am working with to navigate emotions or behaviors that they may want to better understand or change.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
