Sadness, grief and worry are normal human experiences. However, when they endure for long periods of time or when you are overwhelmed by the effects of stress or trauma, if you have difficulty sleeping or concentrating or you feel hopeless or helpless, then it may be time to visit a skilled therapist.

Have you felt like giving up lately? Are you suffering from intense sadness, fear, grief, anger, guilt, or a broken heart? Has trauma or loss turned your life upside down, making it impossible for you to cope with daily life stressors and affecting your relationships or job performance? Parents, do you have children who are so disrespectful and defiant that home has become a war zone? Do they break rules and refuse to do homework and chores? You are physically and emotionally exhausted and are finding life miserable instead of joyful like it should be, correct?

I have worked in a community setting, working with kids, adolescents, and adults, experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, trauma, grief/loss, parenting skills, relationship issues, and adjusting to life transitions.
Throughout life we face so many difficult challenges. In childhood, adolescence, and adult phases, we can encounter traumas or changes in our lives that can hinder how we interact with others and ourselves. Relationships can be complicated, particularly when we are experiencing these changes or traumas in our life. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have experience working with all ages and developmental stages, focusing on reducing the impact of trauma and increasing positive relationships with self and others.

My name is Elizabeth Cowell. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I utilized CBT and EMDR mainly to work with trauma, anxiety, depression, and grief. I also use Gottman and EFT to work with couples. My approach to therapy is influenced by Aaron Beck who founded Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Many people struggle with misconceptions about themselves. These misconceptions are created by the environment. I use CBT to help people change those misconceptions so that they can feel better about themselves and have a more positive outlook on life.

I work with individuals and couples who are experiencing grief, betrayal trauma, anxiety, communication challenges, or other matters that are creating interference in their lives.
Life is full of challenges, and sometimes such challenges can become overwhelming and impede our daily lives. Are you feeling as though there is a constant cloud of self-doubt, frustration, hurt, anger, shame, etc., looming over you? Do you portray someone who ‘has it all together’, yet you are crumbling on the inside? Or maybe you are feeling completely debilitated by recent events in your life. You do not have to face this all on your own. I offer a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental space for you to express your true feelings.

I have experienced depression, trauma, grief and breast cancer.
Are you feeling stressed out, depressed or anxious? If you answered yes, you aren't alone. Studies have found there has been an increase in anxiety and depression since the pandemic. I have created a safe and empathetic environment where you can learn let go of unhealthy relationship patterns and learn new coping mechanisms. Research has found the longer trauma, depression and anxiety go untreated the worse it will get. You can learn how to create balance in your life and have healthy relationships. You can also learn healthy self-care and self-compassion.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
