I believe our destiny is not created by our history. Far too often we let the script of our past taint the next chapter of our life. Are the chains of grief, trauma, addiction, abuse, betrayal, sadness, fear, anger or self-hatred holding you back? I am curious…… What sparkling moments in your life have you forgotten about? What would life look like if you broke free and left all of the labels behind - even just for a moment? Is there a possibility you could awaken from a nightmare and begin to dream differently? What if the rebirth of creativity was possible? What if hope was renewed and slowly a new story began to form?

Overall, my experiences have been working with children and families who have undergone many losses, child abuse, grief issues, separation, depressive symptoms, PTSD, family and relationship issues, domestic violence, substance use/abuse, involvement with court and government agencies and changes of life.
Bi-lingual: Korean-American Marriage and Family Therapist in Los Angeles County - Just minutes from Koreatown and Hancock Park area. Although looking in the mirror may not seem so difficult, looking beyond what is on the surface and into our souls - it can be. What everyone sees on the outside may not be how it feels inside. What seems small to others may be life changing for you. How do you cope with what life brings to you? How is it working for you?

I've been a clinical psychologist for over 40 years. I have treated a broad range of clients during this time utilizing humanistic and psychodynamic approaches. My focus in therapy is with adults who struggle with a variety of personal issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem and relationships. I am quite interested in the concerns that younger adults confront as well as those that individuals face as they transition into their mid-life years including aging, retirement, sexuality, illness, and loss. I believe that I can help clients gain greater clarity as they work to resolve these issues in an atmosphere of support and warmth.

I offer short and long term treatment of distressing psychological symptoms. Common symptoms include attentional difficulties, debilitating anxiety, lack of energy/motivation, overwhelming sadness and anger, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and psychosomatic symptoms. These symptoms often emerge in response to life transitions, intergenerational family dynamics, identity crisis, difficult or traumatic past events, racial trauma, or the loss of a relationship. An additional focus of my practice centers around issues of racial and ethnic identity, navigating interracial relationships, and immigration related issues.

When I was younger, I didn’t know how to communicate my feelings and felt frustrated by potential mischaracterization. After I had my first child, I had a difficult time navigating through postpartum depression. I started asking questions and researching mental health while finding virtual support groups. Through this process, I realized that I had s never been alone in my personal issues. When I was pregnant with my second child, I went back to school for social work to become a mental health professional to serve people in my community to help navigate through anxiety, depression, grief, and intergenerational traumas.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
