I offer individual and group grief counseling to grievers. As a suicide-bereaved mother myself, I offer traumatic grief counseling to parents and other grievers. Because child loss can be so isolating, bereaved parents often find companionship in a group to be a comfort on this difficult lifelong path. While religious/spiritual notions can be a support, often they are not. As people of conscience, we can lean into what comforts and release what is no longer helpful; sometimes clients grapple with their changing beliefs in sessions. Traumatic grief often leads to changes in beliefs and I companion that exploration. I am a humanist.

You might be realizing you need support - that maybe you’re not handling things as well as you’d hoped. Maybe the What Ifs & the doubts have taken over, or you’re not feeling motivated anymore. You’re not sure how it started, but you’re tired of feeling this way. It scares you to think nothing will change. Maybe you’ve had a loss in your life, or maybe you’re just not happy with how often you use your phone/TV, weed, or alcohol to cope with things. Maybe you're not sure what to do to make changes. Maybe this is the first time you've considered counseling - if so, kudos for taking that first step.

In my career, I have worked with teens and adults experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions or wanting to make healthy lifestyle changes.
I believe that everyone has the tools, strengths, and solutions to assist them through any life challenges—we just may need a little support and guidance to find them. My goal as a therapist is to create a warm, supportive and collaborative partnership with you so we can work together to highlight your strengths, validate your struggles, and reflect and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that can sometimes get in our way. By providing a safe space and listening ear, I hope to help you discover your resiliency and empower you to move towards the meaningful change that you desire.

I have learned almost everything of importance about mental health from working with my patients. Though I consider that I had excellent training, as with many things in life, nothing prepared me for the intensity of my patients' life-stories. It was a trial by immersion, but as with such journeys, it was also one of discovery. Patients set before me stories of grief, longing, despair, addiction, obsession, but also of surprise, joy, and abundance. At times, they were overtaken by the force of events swirling around them, losing their bearings and sense of agency.

My training is in systems therapy, which examines the many facets of our lives interact. In therapy, we often look at how surrounding relationships and past experiences effect our current beliefs and values. If emotions and mood are difficult to manage, or there is difficulty adjusting to developmental and life stage changes, I offer support and tools to work through this. These challenges often arise for young adults, new mothers, managing intimate relationships and employment transitions. Too often, grief and loss bring up painful struggles for individuals and families. Therapy can be helpful in these most challenging times.

I love to work with adults 65+ who wish to focus on the everyday challenges of aging: anxiety, depression, loneliness, retirement, grief and loss, care-giving, end of life, meaning and purpose, illness, diminishing capabilities and the list goes on. Aging has a way of exposing us to forces beyond our control. What worked before doesn’t fit now as we grapple with subtle and no-so-subtle changes in our life. We can battle these challenges for a while, but issues in aging march to their own drummer. The inner peace and blessings of aging are elsewhere.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
