I have been a grief counselor for many years treating both normal bereavement and complicated loss.
Everyone experiences stress, yet how one copes is very individual. When life challenges us beyond our limits, we may need professional help. I am a PhD social worker with 30 years of experience in health and mental health. I work with individuals and couples utilizing a strengths-based, psychodynamic counseling approach. Different therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and stress reduction methods are provided in a safe, empathic, and nonjudgmental space to maximize treatment effectiveness. My work focuses on grief and non-death related losses, as well as mood disorders, i.e. depression and anxiety, and chronic health and mental health conditions.

My field work during my MSW program was in community mental health where I worked with people who were dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, grief, and a variety of other diagnoses.
My approach in therapy is to be client-centered and pluralistic in methods of therapy. I place a strong emphasis on understanding the client and developing a safe therapeutic relationship that creates the space for healing therapeutic relationship. I use specific methods of therapy as needed, but the main focus is on understanding the client, and their unique history and personality. I am easy to talk to, and I also bring a strong sense of curiosity in understanding the person sitting across from me.

I specialize in trauma, grief&loss, and relationship issues.
At its core, therapy is about supporting a life lived with awareness and choice, which is not only the best way to honor it, but also to meet the suffering that comes with it. Jung says: "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become". In a way both are true; the family we're born into, and life's events impact us deeply, and we can learn and grow through our experiences, the good and the bad, as opposed to letting them trap or control us. We can all lead lives consciously and choicefully.

My specialization is grief and loss up to and including complicated grief.
My main focus is on the importance of emotional wellbeing. I believe that everyone experiences difficulties in their lives and see the counseling office as a space for clients to express and normalize difficult feelings in a safe environment. I believe that people have all of the components for a happy and healthy life but sometimes need help processing and navigating through their feelings and experiences to learn new and more effective ways to cope. I operate through the Polyvagal Theory lens to assess emotional regulation and work to stabilize and co-regulate clients as this is essential to healing.

I draw from a variety of approaches, like Narrative Therapy, different models of grief work, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Big life changes, like leaving a job to pursue a passion or moving to a new city to start a new life chapter & anything in between, can be hard to navigate. While these can be exciting adventures, these changes can surface lots of difficult feelings in addition to painful memories of moments from our past. Sometimes we feel stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed & lost in these situations. Many of us are told to feel happy about these changes, but that might not align with our lived experiences. You’re not alone in this - we can work together to help you find comfort in navigating all of these things.

I've had past experience in a variety of outpatient clinics as a medical social worker as well as in the nonprofit sector providing grief support for families.
Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and I’m so glad you’ve decided to consider taking this first step in pursuing support. I want our sessions together to feel comfortable, safe, and meaningful. While I do my best to tailor therapy sessions to each individuals' goals and preferences, I do hope that over time I can help you learn to give yourself the gift of more self-compassion as you continue to navigate the various seasons of life.

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. Brene Brown once said, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness”. Our experiences in life can sometimes leave us feeling sad, angry, confused, lost, and everything in between. Whether you’re struggling with experiences of trauma, depression, anxiety, loss, any relational conflicts, or school difficulties, I’m here to walk alongside you on a path towards vulnerability and compassion for all parts of you. Instead of being who you’ve had to be (because trauma), this journey can bring you to who you’re meant to be.

There is never a better time to take the first step than the present and therapy begins with a trusting relationship between the client and therapist. Coping with issues such as depression, anxiety, loss, work stress, burnout, grief and relationship obstacles that cause challenging and painful emotions and thoughts can be overwhelming. Life stressors and unexpected life changes can feel debilitating and you are not alone. A non-judgmental and supportive environment where you feel heard and understood is important. You are not just another appointment on the schedule and I believe in connecting with clients on a deeper level.

I gained experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, and helping families struggling with life transitions, loss, and family conflict.
Finding the right therapist for you or your child can feel like a challenge. As someone who is passionate about working with children, teens, and young adults, I strive to make therapy an experience that is both approachable and engaging for everyone. Through a warm and non-judgmental approach, I create a safe space for open expression and exploration, empowering you and your child to take an active role in the healing journey. I believe that therapy is not a "one-size-fits-all" process, which is why I bring creativity into our sessions, such as art, movement, and play to encourage self-expression and build on your strengths.

I address a broad range of issues including depression, trauma, grief, and dealing with physical impairments and illness.
During my 30+ years as a licensed clinical social worker in full time practice, I have learned that vulnerability is universal, and also, that people of all ages have internal resilience and enduring growth potential. Unresolved internal issues often get expressed through such symptoms as anxiety, sadness, feelings of low self-esteem and shame, feeling stuck in repeated patterns of behavior, and in unfulfilling relationships. Therapy offers an opportunity to work through and understand, thereby resolving, these difficulties.

In addition, I have several years experience working with adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, loss, stress, and challenging life transitions.
There are times in life where even the smallest grain of sand beneath our feet feels like a giant mountain to climb. Life can be hard and draining, especially these past few years. The fact that you are on this website looking for a therapist means that you are already taking a step towards creating positive change in your life and that is something to be celebrated. I strongly believe in the importance of meeting people where they are at in the moment. My goal as a therapist is to work with you and help you self-explore and experience personal growth.

Among several other potential concerns, I am passionate about helping individuals through grief and loss, both death and non-death related.
Searching for a therapist takes tremendous courage, even if you have experienced therapy before. I would be happy to walk with you on your own personal journey of life & mental health. It is a privilege to help people realize their inner strengths and innate problem-solving skills, even in the darkest of times. My past experience is working on a psychiatric inpatient unit, where I developed my ability to form relationships quickly to support people's recovery. I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic relationship to help people achieve their goals, and value relationships in all realms of life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
