The idea of exploring therapy can be difficult, confusing, and uncomfortable. It can also be your first step toward health, balance, and emotional freedom. You can achieve this from the privacy and comfort of your own home via telehealth. I have been helping individuals and couples successfully navigate the counseling process for over 18 years by identifying and changing unconscious beliefs that sabotage personal/relational success and emotional well being. My special interests and certifications are in informed trauma therapy, complex grief and bereavement, anxiety disorders, veterans mental health and telehealth.

Max Ehrmann’s poem, Desiderata reads “you are a child of the universe and have a right to be here. In the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul”. The poem’s sentiment resonates with my counseling philosophy and approach. If you have been struggling with a new medical diagnosis, grieving the loss of a loved one or are overwhelmed in your role as a caretaker consider reaching out. I would be honored to assist you on your healing journey.

Finally, I encourage new parents, early, mid and late career professionals and those struggling with grief to learn how to manage your struggles with the mindfulness-based approach that I provide.
Let's figure this out together. I believe that psychotherapy is a space where you can access your most authentic self and unapologetically be you. As a psychologist, I create a safe space and the connection needed to activate the pathways to healing. I invite you to stay present with your emotions and strengthen your self-compassion regardless of the challenges you are facing. The LGBTQIA+ community is affirmed at my practice. E-mail contact is preferred: pointbalanceat@gmail.com. *I am an out of network provider.* I do offer walk and talk therapy at nearby Greenbelt Lake.

Whether it's a career change, relationship dynamics, aging, or adapting to new social roles, these transitions can often lead to feelings of uncertainty, stress, and disorientation. • • Accepting New Clients! • • Hi! I'm Neena - I’m so thankful you are thinking of including me in your therapeutic journey! I work mostly with adolescents + adults experiencing trauma, depression, anxiety, LGBTQ+ issues, and/or racial trauma. Growing up as a first generation American, I have often found myself existing in spaces that did not provide me with a real sense of belonging. I believe that healing and growth in therapy occurs within a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, so I am committed to creating a space where you feel like you truly belong: without judgment, without fear, and without expectations.

As a Licensed Master of Social Work, I practice individual therapy. I aim to create a safe, warm, and authentic environment for you to explore relationship dynamics, anxious tendencies, deep-rooted trauma, or just to say things you never thought you would say out loud. I understand that mental health is a journey, one with many ups and downs, sometimes feeling as if it is a roller coaster that is never-ending. But you are here and that in of itself deserves recognition. "I want a standing ovation for every person who wakes up and moves toward the sun, when there is a shadow pulling them back on the inside" - Rupi Kaur

Self-love, feeling grounded, confidence, and balance each play a large role in how we cope with life's stressors. Lacking in any one of these could easily result in some level of suffering. In addition, the world we live in can be stressful and overwhelming at times, with many faced with unresolved issues and emotional challenges.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
