Given that you're looking for a therapist, you've probably read about a lot of different approaches. What's widely accepted, though, is that modalities (EMDR, ACT, and other acronyms) matter less than the "therapeutic alliance" — the sense that you're talking with someone who gets you in a way you can feel and trust. That fit is what makes therapy work, and you owe it to yourself to find it. A big focus in my practice is LGBT clients, but I've gained real depth with many other kinds of people too. The common denominator is usually a readiness to dig into things.
I'm a therapist in my 50s who has lived a life or three, and that breadth of experience has been the foundation for the conversations that help in therapy. I rely on my education and training, but more on what I've learned from the people who have shared their lives with me — twenty-plus years of it, first as a social worker and now as a therapist.
Much of our work together is helping you understand, reframe, and reshape the mental habits that make things harder than they need to be. I have found that, even talking about the hardest things (maybe especially then) we will sometimes laugh together. My approach is empathetic and — occasionally — humanely skeptical. Let's talk about where to begin.
