I am certified in TF-CBT (Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), a Level II EMDR Therapist, and is trained in the Gottman method for couple's therapy.
I have many years of experience in the field of helping others. It has been my goal throughout each of these experiences to help those I work with to find peace. I realize that it takes courage to begin the process of therapy and would be honored to be a part of your journey. I have experience working with children, adolescents and adults, partnering with each individual to find growth, healing and their own level of happiness. Doing so in a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere which allows clients learn resilience and self-awareness to enhance their well-being.

For many years my clients have primarily been individuals, groups, and families coming out of abusive and sometimes violent relationships and addiction. Although that was the original primary focus, most of them also struggled with other accompanying factors like depression, anxiety and other serious mental health diagnoses. My clinical focus has recently shifted to more of a community-based population. I have found this work incredibly rewarding. I enjoy working with additional needs such as grief, prenatal, postpartum depression, and abandonment trauma to name a few.

We have all been going through so much over the last four years with COVID and world wide traumas. I am a “baby boomer” and a survivor of COVID. I understand the anxiety we all feel with so many unknowns and so much grief and loss. We are all on a journey of recovery. I can help with that journey. I care and have the training and empathy to be a guide towards health. My therapuetic style is holistic: focusing on a mind, body and spiritual connection. I work with my patients to promote positive change; we are partners on the journey. Most of my sessions are online which is very convenient for my patients. I am very good at my job.

From the outside looking in, you have a great life. You’re accomplished, driven, and dependable. But on the inside, you are screaming for life to slow down. That little voice in your head is quick to remind you of all the ways you’re falling short. You are just trying to hold it all together, but it's exhausting and you don't think you can do it anymore. You are tired of giving so much to everyone else while you continue to come up last on your list. Not anymore. It's time for a change.

My path to becoming a therapist was more of a calling than a career decision. I’m not particularly suited to this profession. I’m introverted, which causes me to present as somewhat unfriendly and aloof to strangers. I’m really not concerned with small talk or what I consider the superficialities of life. But when it comes to exploring the deepest, most difficult and painful core aspects of your life that’s the space where I feel most comfortable. The foundation of my practice is my own personal journey in 12-step recovery. I would say I was "chosen" for the gift of recovery from a self-destructive lifestyle more than 34 years ago.

To quote Mary Harvey, “trauma survivors have symptoms instead of memories.” In my work, I have found it is common for people to question if they are "crazy" or if something is "wrong" with them. More often than not, the answer is "no." No, you are not crazy. No, something is not wrong with you. Rather, your body has adapted to traumas and perceived threats in ways that have helped you survive over time. When we feel tense, anxious, or angry and on edge with those uncomfortable bodily responses like panic, dizziness, or shutting down, our body is talking to us. Trauma is a legacy of symptoms that keeps on giving every day.

Healing requires honest care without judgment. In order to provide individualized treatment and support, I will work cooperatively with you to clarify your treatment goals and draw from a variety of methodologies to create a plan that fits your needs. My style is warm, open, encouraging, and direct. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity, with a realistic and effective approach to treatment. To me, an individual should be treated as a whole, including the mind, the body, and the (soul/self)- whatever that is to them.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
