I am advanced trained in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and Level 1 trained in the Gottman method.
Are you emotionally and mentally distressed? Have you fought so much that you feel as though you don't have any fight left? Maybe you're experiencing conflict in your marriage and/or family relationships. You're unsure of what to do and where to turn. I have been there and understand the struggle.

For couples struggling with conflict, disconnection, or infidelity, I use Emotionally Focused and Gottman Method interventions.
We all face difficult experiences that can seem unmanageable. You may be struggling with anxiety or depression or with old or new trauma. Perhaps your closest relationships have become a source of stress instead of a source of comfort. Maybe you are experiencing grief and loss. Going through these experiences results in a decline in your general well-being and happiness. My approach offers an in-depth understanding of your struggles to make long lasting changes in your life and relationships.

I use evidence based models and practices such as EMDR, Bowen Family Systems Theory, and the Gottman Method.
The single most important factor predicting a successful outcome in therapy is the quality of the relationship between client and therapist. As you look for a therapist, keep in mind: feeling like that person gets you is the top priority. I am licensed in Alabama and Tennessee and have over 19 years of experience with a wide range of mental health settings and concerns. I use a systemic (relational) framework to help people balance individuality and togetherness, to better communicate their needs while listening to the needs of others, and to establish a clear sense of who they are.

I am Level 1 trained in the Gottman Method, an evidence based practice for couple's therapy, as well as Prepare-Enrich.
I am licensed in both AL and TN. Together we will seek progress, not perfection. My therapy is relaxed and goal centered. I use humor when it allows, as laughter is good for the soul. We all have a longing for attention and responsiveness from our loved ones. When needs go unmet, we get stuck in patterns of automatic responses. I want client's to recognize needs, take responsibility, and learn how to better disrupt unhealthy patterns. My desire is to help you gain awareness and be more present with yourself and other people in your life.

And when working with couples specifically, I incorporate Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which builds mutual support within the relationship.
Do you feel lost and alone? Are you overwhelmed by anxiety or bitterness? Or is there a traumatic memory you can't seem to move past? You don't have do figure things out on your own. I offer both individual and couples counseling, with an emphasis on relationships and trauma. If you're struggling with relational wounds, grief related to a loss, or medically complicated situations, I would be honored to help you navigate a way forward. I believe that people are born with enormous potential! That said, sometimes situations occur in our lives which directly or indirectly impact the pace at which we may reach that potential. When people are able to identify at what point they stopped being an author in their lives, they can go back, pick up the pen, and begin re-writing their story. I bring an eclectic approach in moving us forward (EFT, DBT, CBT, among others) in consideration of identified goals. I regularly serve therapists, bariatric clients, men/women with perinatal struggles, couples, and individuals struggling with anxiety/OCD and/or depression, among others.

Life can be hard! If you are struggling with challenges such as: marriage or relationship issues, infidelity, anxiety, depression, divorce, job loss, or low self-esteem maybe it is time to do something different. If your current efforts to deal with relationships, emotions, and life's challenges just aren't working, it is probably time to get some help. Maybe you're unsure if counseling really works. Counseling is no "magic pill" that instantly fixes your problems! However, it does help many people change, heal, and improve their quality of life.

The opening of Dante's Inferno reads "Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost." This story of a person's journey through hell became a classic because all of us have found, at one time or another, that the straight path in our lives has been lost, and that we are alone in a dark forest. Do you feel lost? When we look a little closer, we begin to understand that most of the darkness around us is self-created. That forest was cultivated with the seeds of our past experience.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
