I am trained in Relational, EMDR, Gottman Method, and Cognitive Behavioral therapies.
Over the past six years, it has been such a pleasure walking with my clients through their journeys of healing and change. I have had the privilege of sitting with parents struggling through the heartache of divorce, immigrants and children of immigrants who are making a home against all odds, college students fighting dominant culture norms, survivors of marital abuse, and those fighting to escape their childhood trauma. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in education and non-profits in India, and I am astounded, then and now, by the human capacity for resilience and strength in the face of hardship.

Relationship is the key word in my background, having to help people find connection between personal and professional, romance and friendship, and physical and spiritual aspects of life and self. This leads down an existential path driven by exploration of your suffering and how to be with it. In my work, I am analytical, patient and kind to discovering strengths and stability.

You might have been feeling stuck and living a meaningless life for a while. You might have problems with sleep, relationships, and feel like you carry a heavy weight on your shoulders. Often, you find yourself asking questions such as "Why is this happening to me?", "What did I do to deserve this?" "How do I get out of this situation?" Sometimes you feel stuck in the past and sometimes you are afraid of the future. Overall, you are uncertain about your purpose in life.

Therapy is a place for you to name areas of pain, a place to feel without judgment, and a place to reclaim what is yours. Shame is the source of so much of this pain and judgment, convincing you that you are broken. Shame is often so intertwined with sexuality because of the societal silence around the topic. Perhaps sex is painful, perhaps you are more aware of others desires than your own, perhaps you feel empty from running on fumes and enjoyment is the last thing on your mind. Whatever the reason, engaging your sexual health can help overall wellness, and ultimately be the way back into relationship with yourself!

I work with individuals - teens and adults, couples, and folks in all forms of relationship systems (polyamorous, ethically non-monogamous, etc). Individual therapy often centers around identity development and exploration, development of supportive coping skills, and processing the daily struggles and challenges folks face as they navigate their lives in this ever-changing world. In work with those seeking relationship support, I enjoy helping clients in resolving conflict, increasing emotional and physical intimacy, and working on breaking down communication barriers.

I work with teens and adults, couples, and families to help them resolve conflict, increase emotional and physical intimacy in relationships, and live more authentically. I believe that counseling creates opportunities for individuals, couples, and families to explore their unique life experiences and empowers them to accomplish their mental health and relationship goals. Previously, I worked with U.S. military veterans and their families to help them nurture safe and authentic relationships with their spouses and loved ones while readjusting to civilian life.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
